Jane Seymour is opening up about her engagement to John Zambetti
In an exclusive interview, the couple tells PEOPLE about their unique proposal — and the beautiful ring
Says Seymour of her fiancé: “He’s just the kindest, most intelligent, loving, caring, giving human being I’ve ever met”
Wedding bells will soon be ringing for Jane Seymour!
The Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman actress, 75, is engaged to musician and emergency room physician John Zambetti after nearly three years together, the couple confirms exclusively to PEOPLE. And while the proposal itself turned into what they describe as something of a comedy of errors, the sentiment behind it was incredibly heartfelt.
Zambetti tells PEOPLE in an exclusive joint interview with Seymour that the ring he selected immediately stood out because of its unusual design: two stones instead of one.

“I saw this one ring that really spoke to me,” he says. “Because it had two stones in it. I mean, normally an engagement ring would be one stone, but I like the fact that it had two stones, and they had a little pavé path leading up to each stone.”
To Zambetti, the symbolism was obvious: “I thought, like, it’s the two of us together, and there’s our past lives each leading up to us being together.”
Though the couple had already committed to a life together, Zambetti says he ultimately decided he wanted to make things official.
“I’m just kind of old school,” he says. “I don’t like this partner talk. To me, we’re not forming a law firm.”
Before settling on a proposal plan, however, Zambetti entertained some wildly elaborate ideas. Among them? Enlisting the help of the couple’s friend, Mick Jagger.
After attending a small dinner with the Rolling Stones frontman and others, Zambetti imagined a scenario in which Jagger would secretly provide the engagement ring during a future gathering.
“I started thinking, what I’ll do is Mick will come over with his wife. I’ll give him the ring. And then I’ll propose and say …I don’t have a ring. And Mick will go like, ‘Oh, I have a ring,’ ” Zambetti recalls, laughing. “All these crazy things, right? Which are totally preposterous.”
Ultimately, Zambetti decided not to wait for the perfect moment.
“It got to be close to her birthday. It was actually Valentine’s Day, the day before her birthday. I thought, ‘This is insane. I’m just gonna do it,’ ” he says.
The proposal took place at the couple’s Malibu home and quickly went off-script.
“I got down on my knees, the whole thing,” Zambetti says. “I had the ring hidden in the safe, pulled out the ring. I opened the box, and the ring popped out of the box, onto the bed.”
Things only became more chaotic from there, he adds. “Then I had to climb under the bed, and then I couldn’t get out, and she had to get out of the bed and pull me out of the bed.”
Adds Seymour cheekily: “And we weren’t wearing any clothes.”
Of course, Seymour still remembers the moment fondly.
“Serious bedhead involved. But the funniest part was that he couldn’t get up afterwards,” she says. “His knee was now stuck from being under the bed and I’m not strong enough to pull him up because he weighs almost twice what I do. We looked at one another and started laughing hysterically.”
While Seymour admits she had a feeling a proposal might eventually happen, she was still surprised by the timing.
“I knew he had found a ring,” she says, adding: “I was surprised, but I was not surprised that he wanted me to live with him for the rest of our lives. That [decision] had already been made.”
The couple, who will celebrate three years together in August, say their families have warmly embraced the relationship. Zambetti, who was previously married for 43 years, has two kids while Seymour, who has been married and divorced four times, has six children.

Seymour says Zambetti’s children and extended family have welcomed her, while her own children quickly became fans of their mother’s future husband.
“My family loved him so much that when they first met him, they said, ‘You’re not allowed to date this man. We like him too much. You may screw it up,’ ” she says with a laugh.
As for wedding plans, the pair say they’re still figuring out exactly what form the celebration will take. “For us, the most important thing, it’s about us and about our families,” Seymour says. “We’ve got a lot of very close friends and no one’s getting any younger. So I think at some point there will be some [sort of celebration or ceremony.]”
Whatever form it takes, one thing is certain: Seymour has found something she says she never expected.
“I just feel nothing but pure unconditional love and support,” she says, adding: “And my worry has always been — I’ve been through betrayals. I’ve been through a lot of ups and downs in life and I don’t know that I dare trust myself, let alone anyone else anymore.”
Of Zambetti, she adds: “He’s just the kindest, most intelligent, loving, caring, giving human being I’ve ever met.”
