Jared Padalecki and Matt Czuchry are sharing their best memories from Gilmore Girls for this year’s Sexiest Man Alive issue
Padalecki says he will never forget filming “The Bracebridge Dinner” episode in season 2 when Edward Herrmann seemingly revealed that he had an eidetic memory
Herrmann, who died in 2014, played Richard Gilmore, the father of Alexis Bledel’s lead Rory Gilmore
Edward Herrmann was an impressive man, much like his Gilmore Girls character Richard Gilmore, says Jared Padalecki,
While chatting with PEOPLE for the 2025 Sexiest Man Alive issue, Padalecki, 43, and Matt Czuchry, who played Rory Gilmore’s boyfriends Dean and Logan respectively, shared some behind-the-scenes memories from the beloved series. The Supernatural alum says one of his favorites came from an unexpected encounter with the late Herrmann during a long day on set filming the “The Bracebridge Dinner” episode.
“It was before the Lord of the Rings movies came out, and I was reading one of the books, and Ed Herrmann, rest in peace, an amazing man, came up and he said, ‘Have you read them before?’ I was like, ‘No, it’s my first time.’ He’s like, ‘Where are you right now?’ When I told him, he just rattled off quotes from the scene.”

“I think he had an eidetic memory,” Padalecki continues. “I remember I turned it back a page, and I was like, ‘That’s exactly what happened.’ He said, ‘You’ll enjoy it very well.’ I was like, ‘Oh my God. This is a brilliant man.'”

Joking that he was just an uncertain “little Jared Padalecki from San Antonio” in the early stages of his career, the Friday the 13th star praised Herrmann — who died from brain cancer in 2014 — for his kindness.
“He just treated me like an equal,” says Padalecki. “I was like, ‘Maybe I can do this.’”
Czuchry, 48, adds: “Those are the moments you remember as an actor — being on set and the connection with the cast, the connection with the crew, being at craft service and all those things. That connection is what’s so beautiful about the behind-the-scenes aspects.”
Like Padalecki, Czuchry also felt the warmth when he joined in season 5. He says one of his first memories as “the new kid on the block” was when the show was celebrating 100 episodes, and despite not being too familiar with the cast and crew, he was brought into the festivities by creators Amy Sherman-Palladino and Dan Palladino.
“It just felt so welcoming to be a part of that experience and for them to say, ‘Hey, no, no, you’re a part of this. You’re making this happen,’” he says. “I remember that episode fondly because of the emotional way that it connected to me and how important it was for me to feel like I belonged.”
That family-like dynamic showed through onscreen, too, which is part of the reason Czuchry thinks the Gilmore Girls fanbase remains so strong even 25 years after its premiere.
“It’s infused in people’s lives in such an incredible way, not just watching it,” he explains. “It’s more like, ‘How can I really carry on what this makes me feel like through my daughter or through my sister or through my mother?’ That’s just an incredible layer to it. You really see the magic that this show has had for generations of people.”
