Jasper’s Vampire Maker May Come From Anne Rice Lore, Tease TALAMASCA Creators

A post-burning vampire Jasper (William fichtner) in Talamasca: The Secret Order.

The vampire Jasper really stole the show in Talamasca: The Secret Order. Played to perfection by William Fichtner, this new Anne Rice Immortal Universe vampire gave us the perfect balance of terrifying and vulnerable, manipulative and charming. In short, we absolutely loved him. In season one of the Talamasca, we learned a good deal about Jasper’s history and how he became a vampire, a sad tale. But one thing we didn’t find out in Talamasca‘s first season is who exactly made Jasper into a vampire. Jasper tells us only that, after years of looking, he eventually found the dark gift. Curious about our new fav, we at Nerdist asked Talamasca‘s creators and the man himself, William Fichtner, about who might have turned Jasper into an immortal. And it sounds like Jasper’s vampire maker could be a character straight out of Anne Rice’s lore—but we’ll have to wait for more seasons of Talamasca to know for sure.

Here’s what Talamasca showrunner John Lee Hancock had to tell us on the subject of Jasper’s vampire maker. “We’ve talked in general and sometimes in specifics about it, and we have an idea that’s being bandied about in the room, and when it happened, where it happened, et cetera. We try to stay cognizant and are aware of different characters from Anne Rice books, lore, canon, et cetera, not being tied to them, but just being aware of ’em. And, yeah, so we have a general idea. We haven’t thrown that out yet.”

It sounds like who turned Jasper into a vampire is at the very least not an insignificant question. In fact, it’s one the creators have talked extensively about from a macro and micro level. But John Lee Hancock’s note about being very cognizent of Anne Rice’s characters as they discuss the question of Jasper’s maker in the Talamasca writers’ room truly seems to be a huge hint that, in fact, Jasper was turned into a vampire by a vampire who has already appeared in Anne Rice’s lore before. We’ll call that fascinating.

Executive producer Mark Lafferty added to the thought, sharing of Jasper’s turning, “And I will say one thing we do know that we’ve talked about, and this comes out in just a few little clauses or lines in Talamasca 1.04, is that Jasper had kind of this long journey on foot from South America through Central America and then into Texas. And so it very well may be that he was made into a vampire in Texas. And the idea, and I think that Jasper is sort of a real Texan, came out of John’s head, but for me, it feels like the excitement of at some point, being able to show that story is really tantalizing.”

We’d definitely like to see it too. It doesn’t seem like Anne Rice had any vampires that were overtly from Texas in her books, so that clue is a dead end to helping us crack the code of the identity of Jasper’s maker. But we know that vampires move around all the time.

Meanwhile, Jasper’s actor, William Fichtner, expressed that Jasper’s maker wasn’t the focus of season one of Talamasca. But should the show receive a season two, it would definitely be an interesting area to explore. Fichtner noted, “I have some ideas about Jasper’s maker, but it’s not really been part of our journey. In episode four, Jasper explains to Guy how he came to be when he was in his youth, in that when he was in a coven, some were vampires, some were not. But a lot of times on a first season of a show like this, you focus on the journey of the aspects that are happening in the storytelling of this. Right. The backstory being who would’ve been that person? He refers to it. But I don’t know if we’re lucky enough to do a second season. Maybe we find out.”
