Pop artist Jay Putty chatted about his cover of “Iris” by the Goo Goo Dolls, as well as his new music and songwriting inspirations.

What inspired you to cover “Iris” by the Goo Goo Dolls?

I think growing up a ’90s kid, everyone loves this song. It’s truly an evergreen. It’s one of those songs that transcends time. And I thought with my friend Matt Macleod what if we took a really cinematic approach to it? What if we blend that movie soundtrack moment with the earnest honesty in these lyrics? Thankfully it worked. Booktok got a hold of it and it took off from there.

What inspires your music and songwriting?

Life really. There was a period from like 2018 to 2023 when I wasn’t really an artist. I didn’t think I was saying anything new. Or fun. Or worth fighting for. And I had one of the most heavy and tumultuous times of my life in 2022. There was so much loss and grief that I needed to get it out. But not in a woe is me kind of way but in a “I have all these emotions and I don’t know how to process them out loud” kind of way.

How does it feel to be an artist in the digital age? (Now with streaming, technology, and social media being so prevalent)

Honestly I love it truly. I feel like I’m one post away from connecting to people who make ME feel less alone let alone those same people listening and feeling less alone.

There’s a beautiful dichotomy between going online for things you don’t have offline. And I think that’s why I love it. I can connect with someone through music in Indonesia or the Philippines the same way I’d connect with my friend in Nashville.

What do your plans for the future include?

I just released my newest single, “Growing Old,” which is the lead single on my next EP “The People I Loved and Have Loved Me Back”, which is about how so many people come into your life.

You become the best parts of all of them. Even if they’re not in your life anymore. They touched, shaped, and changed your heart. Whether they were great people or bad people in your life.

What is your advice for young and emerging artists?

It’s never been easier to be yourself. To be an artist in this time frame. There’s so much noise. So many people wanting to make music or be an influencer.

The best way to achieve that is to be the best most authentic version of yourself that you can be. There’s no limit to what you can do if you just be yourself.

Which artists would you like to do a dream collab with someday?

I have incredible recency bias (at least that’s what my producer and incredible friend Kevin Gates tells me), and I think Alex Warren would be amazing.

Alex is really just is himself. But he does it in a way that is so human. He loves. He grieves. And it’s powerful.

Ed Sheeran is always at the top of my list. But a curveball is probably Spencer Charnas of Ice Nine Kills one of my favorite bands. Incredible visionary in my opinion.

What does the word success mean to you? (My favorite question)

Success means I’m living as the fat nerdy kid who almost died but found music, living his life to the fullest through music, and saying, “This is everything.” This is enough.

What would you like to say to your fans about your cover of “Iris”? (What’s the one thing you want them to get out of it)

I want them to get a sense of belonging. That we aren’t so different from each other. We laugh. We cry. We bleed. We love. We’re human. And we can do so much together if we work together.

His new single “Growing Old” is available on Spotify.
