Abbott Elementary actress Lisa Ann Walter did not hold back when she took the mic and started talking about Jeff Bezos during an alternate fashion show to the Met Gala held earlier today.
Walter specifically called out Bezos, who sponsored this year’s Met Gala, causing backlash, calls for a boycott, and rumored snubs from Meryl Streep and Zendaya. “We all know what’s happening uptown tonight,” she said at the 17:37 mark of the video above. “There’s one guy. One very big, very bald billionaire who wants to make the Met Gala all about him.”
Walter questioned the involvement of Bezos, whom she referred to as “Temu Lex Luthor.”
“How did an event that’s supposed to celebrate creativity, artistry, and fabulousness in all genders, end up revolving around this Temu Lex Luthor, who profits off of pushing working people to their very brink?” she asked. “How did an event that is supposed to about celebrating our culture become a vessel for one man’s ego?”
Bezos and wife Lauren Sánchez were also named honorary chairs at this year’s fundraiser.
The actress and fashion editor Gabriella Karefa-Johnson co-hosted the Ball Without Billionaires show, which, according to Fast Company, enlisted former and current employees from Amazon, The Washington Post, Starbucks, and more to model pieces that fit the theme of “Labor is Art.”
A not-so-subtle response to the Met Gala’s theme of “Fashion is Art.”
Before slamming Bezos, Walter praised the event, saying, “This is what it looks like when the people who actually run the world decide to throw their own party.”
