Country star Jelly Roll’s wife, Bunnie XO, is speaking out about what she described as the “darkest time” of her life, saying a popular class of weight loss drugs triggered severe mental health struggles.
Bunnie XO, whose real name is Alyssa DeFord, said she experienced suicidal thoughts while taking a GLP 1 medication.
She began the weight loss drug in December, and told People magazine the impact on her emotional well-being was immediate.
“Honestly, I just went through a bout of suicidal ideation from using a GLP-1, which, I really think people need to talk more about this,” the 46-year-old host of the Dumb Blonde podcast said.
She continued, “I just told them, I said, ‘I haven’t had suicidal ideation like this since 2020.’ That’s how bad it was.”
GLP 1 drugs, originally developed to treat Type 2 diabetes, are now widely prescribed for weight loss. While many patients report reduced appetite and significant weight loss, some have raised concerns about mood changes.
DeFord said the experience resurfaced painful memories from a prior period of depression.
“That was one of the darkest times of my life and it was scary,” she said, referring to her earlier struggles.
She added that the recent episode felt unexpected given her past mental health history.
“I prided myself on the fact that I only had anxiety. I never had depression,” she said. “So when you get slammed with suicidal ideation and visions and just, oh, it was horrific.”
DeFord said the intensity of the thoughts caught her off guard and forced her to confront the difference between anxiety and depression in a new way.
“You want to have anxiety because you want to be scared to die,” she explained. “You don’t want to have depression because you literally don’t care if you want to die. So yeah, it was really dark.”
DeFord, who is married to Grammy-nominated country artist Jelly Roll, has been open about her personal struggles in the past.
She is set to release her memoir, Stripped Down: Unfiltered and Unapologetic, in February.
