From a practical point of view, a rug can also create definition. ‘A rug provides a visual boundary that lets your eye know exactly where the dining zone begins and ends, explains Joanne Loftus, President and Owner of Archival Designs.’ Extend the rug at least 24 inches beyond the edge of the table on all sides. That way chairs stay on the rug even if they are pulled out for sitting, and no one gets their chair leg caught on the edge of the rug mid-meal.’
