Jim Jarmusch first premiered a film at the Venice International Film Festival more than 20 years ago.

And this weekend, the indie film stalwart won his first Golden Lion.

Jarmusch received the top prize at the prestigious film festival Saturday for “Father Mother Sister Brother,” his first film to compete for the honor.

The writer-director filmed part of the movie in New Jersey (see location details below).

The lauded work stars Oscar winner Cate Blanchett, Adam Driver, Vicky Krieps (“Phantom Thread’), Mayim Bialik, Charlotte Rampling, Indya Moore (”Pose”), Luka Sabbat (“Grown-ish”), Sarah Greene (“Bad Sisters”), Françoise Lebrun (“The Mother and the Whore”) and Jarmusch’s frequent collaborator, singer-songwriter Tom Waits.

“Father Mother Sister Brother” is a triptych — an anthology film in three parts (watch trailer below).

Three different stories trace the bonds between adult children and their connections with their parents.

Production took place in Dublin, Paris and New Jersey, where filming began in Passaic County in 2023.

Jarmusch filmed the “father” section of the movie in West Milford at Two Pond Farm on Weaver Road as well as on Weaver Road between Macopin and Otterhole roads, the New Jersey Motion Picture and Television Commission tells NJ Advance Media.

Jarmusch, 72, sported his usual dark shades with his distinctive shock of white hair as he accepted the Golden Lion Saturday in Venice.

“Oh sh–,” he said, per Variety.

“As filmmakers, we’re not motivated by competition, but this is something I truly appreciate,” the director said of the honor for his “quiet film.”

“Art does not have to address politics directly to be political,” he added. “It can engender empathy, which is the first step toward solving our problems.”

Mubi will release “Father Mother Sister Brother” in theaters Dec. 24.

The production reported spending $4,689,400 in New Jersey and received a $1,682,003 tax credit, per the state Economic Development Authority.

It’s just the latest of the director’s movies to film in Jersey.

Jarmusch’s history of filming in the Garden State stretches back to his second film in the 1980s.

His local credits include the 2016 Paterson-set movie “Paterson,” starring Adam Driver.

Before that, there was the 2005 film “Broken Flowers” starring Bill Murray (Mahwah, Fort Lee, Bedminster, Alexandria, Newark, Paterson, Somerville, Wayne and Teterboro); the 1999 movie “Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai,” starring Forest Whitaker (North Bergen and Jersey City); and the 1984 movie “Stranger Than Paradise” (Hoboken).

Director, actor, writer and producer Sara Driver, Jarmusch’s longtime partner and creative collaborator, grew up in Westfield.

“Father Mother Sister Brother” has yet another Jersey connection in veteran cinematographer Frederick Elmes, who hails from Mountainside.

Elmes made his feature debut in David Lynch’s astonishing 1977 feature directorial debut “Eraserhead” and first worked with Jarmusch on his 1991 film “Night on Earth.”

Last year’s Golden Lion winner was “The Room Next Door,” Pedro Almodóvar’s first English-language feature. That movie, starring Tilda Swinton and Julianne Moore, also filmed in New Jersey.

The most recent Golden Lion honoree to win the Oscar for best picture was “Nomadland,“ which has yet another Jersey connection.

The 2020 film, for which Chloé Zhao won the Oscar for best director, stars Frances McDormand, who won best lead actress for her performance. The movie is based on the book “Nomadland: Surviving America in the Twenty-First Century” by Jessica Bruder, who grew up in Montclair.

“Father Mother Sister Brother,” rated R, runs 1 hour and 50 minutes and will open in theaters Dec. 24.
