The Tonight Show host Jimmy Fallon said he will remain balanced when it comes to politics. After Jimmy Kimmel Live! was temporarily suspended, politics has been a sensitive subject for late-night talk shows. In the wake of this controversy, Fallon admitted that his show has never been too political and will continue to be that way.
Jimmy Fallon to continue avoiding politics on The Tonight Show
While promoting his new reality competition show, On Brand, on CNBC’s Squawk on the Street, Fallon was asked how he feels about broadcasting on an FCC-licensed network amid the ongoing Jimmy Kimmel controversy.
Fallon responded, “Our show has never really been that political, you know. We hit both sides equally, and we try to make everybody laugh, and that’s really the way our show works.”
He added, “Our monologues are kind of the same that we’ve been doing since Johnny Carson was hosting The Tonight Show. So really, I just keep my head down and make sure the jokes are funny. I have great writers… clever, smart writers. And we’re just trying to make the best show we possibly can and entertain everybody.”
While Fallon doesn’t usually address political subjects, he did respond when the news of Kimmel’s suspension broke a few days ago. During his opening monologue, he included a humorous segment about censorship. In his speech, Fallon mouthed a statement silently while a voiceover of someone else read his words, highlighting the irony of censorship.
Kimmel’s suspension came after his remarks about Charlie Kirk during a September 17 monologue at Utah Valley University. His comments drew national attention and political pressure, including from U.S. President Donald Trump. Hours later, FCC Chairman Brendan Carr publicly threatened Disney, which led ABC to suspend Jimmy Kimmel Live! indefinitely.
The suspension sparked protests outside Disney headquarters, with the public voicing concerns about free speech. More than 400 Hollywood artists signed a letter condemning the action. After negotiations between Kimmel and ABC, Jimmy Kimmel Live! returned on September 23, drawing over six million viewers despite several affiliates preempting the show.
