Jimmy Kimmel is getting candid about his future, and it might not be in the United States.
The late night host opened up about the country’s political climate during an Aug. 7 episode of “The Sarah Silverman Podcast.” While chatting with Silverman, his ex-girlfriend and longtime friend, he discussed a growing trend: people seeking citizenship abroad amid the current state of U.S. affairs.
“I did get Italian citizenship,” Kimmel revealed. “I do have that.”
Silverman called the move “amazing.”
As their conversation continued, the pair reflected on how dire things have become in the U.S., agreeing that the situation is “way worse” than expected.
Kimmel continued to call the status of the country “unbelievable.”
“What’s going on is … as bad as you thought it was gonna be, it’s so much worse. It’s just unbelievable,” he said. “I feel like it’s probably even worse than [Donald Trump] would like it to be.”

Silverman added that her hope is these challenges will eventually “bring people together.”
Kimmel had his own thoughts on this.
“There are a lot of people … now you see these clips of Joe Rogan saying, ‘Why’s he doing this? He shouldn’t be deporting people.’ People go: ‘F**k you, you supported him.’ Whatever. I don’t buy into that. I don’t believe the ‘F**k you, you supported him.’ I think everybody has to have a — the door needs to stay open.” Silverman agreed.
He continued to emphasize the importance of allowing people to change.
“If you want to change your mind, that’s so hard to do,” he said. “If you want to admit you were wrong, that’s so hard and so rare to do. You are welcome.”
After Trump’s election in November 2024, Kimmel made his feelings about the returning president clear.
“It was a terrible night for women, for children, for the hundreds of thousands of hard-working immigrants who make this country go, for health care, for our climate, for science, for journalism, for justice, for free speech. It was a terrible night for poor people, for the middle class, for seniors who rely on Social Security, for our allies in Ukraine, for NATO, for the truth and democracy and decency,” he said in the opening monologue on “Jimmy Kimmel Live” the night after Election Day. “And it was a terrible night for everyone who voted against him. And guess what? It was a bad night for everyone who voted for him too. You just don’t realize it yet.”
The comedian isn’t the only celebrity who has contemplated leaving the United States. Last year, Ellen DeGeneres and wife Portia de Rossi left America for the U.K. after the 2024 presidential election.
