Alan Jackson’s Farewell Concert to Be Filmed for NBC Special

So many artists, so many songs, so little time. Each week we review a handful of new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, track premieres, and more all day. We update a playlist weekly of some of our current favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place.

THE SOUND OF ANIMALS FIGHTING – “BANGLADESH” & “CHRYSANTHEMUM”

Experimental post-hardcore supergroup The Sound of Animals Fighting (members of Circa Survive, RX Bandits, L.S. Dunes, etc) have shared two more songs off their first full-length album in 17 years, The Maiden. The two songs show off very different sides of the record, and they’re both as shapeshifting and unpredictable as this band always is.

GEESE – “100 HORSES”

Geese’s third album, Getting Killed, is out in September, and the latest single is “100 Horses,” a frantic, off-kilter jam that defies categorization.

KENNY DOPE FEAT. RÓISÍN MURPHY – “BORN UNDER PUNCHES (AND THE HEAT GOES ON)” (TALKING HEADS COVER)

Naive Melodies is a new Talking Heads tribute album and you can get a taste via this cover of Remain in Light classic “Born Under Punches” by Kenny Dope (Masters at Work, The Bucketheads) and Róisín Murphy.

—

AMANDA SHIRES – “PIECE OF MIND”

Amanda Shires’ new album Nobody’s Girl is out next month, and she’s given us another preview with “Piece of Mind.” “This one came when I was finally done being polite about pain,” she says. “I wrote this song because I never got closure. ‘Piece of Mind’ became the place I said everything I didn’t get to say. Writing it gave me an ending. Not tidy. Not bitter. Just mine.”

—

TOM SKINNER (THE SMILE) – “MARGARET ANNE”

Tom Skinner (The Smile, Sons of Kemet) will release new solo album Kaleidoscopic Visions on September 26 and he’s just shared a new song from it that is dedicated to his mother, the former concert pianist Anne Shasby. Tom says: “In the early 80s, shortly after I was born, my mother stepped away from the concert stage — not out of a loss of ability or passion, but out of frustration with the entrenched misogyny of the classical world, and to focus on raising our family. No small thing, as I have come to understand. She never stopped playing, though; the sound of her piano has been a constant presence throughout my life, and still is to this day. In no small part shaping my musical sensibility and laying the foundation for my own musical path. The Max Roach inspired rhythm and taut energy of this piece speaks to her courage, strength and resilience in following her heart.”

RUNO PLUM – “SICKNESS”

Minneapolis-based singer-songwriter runo plum has signed to Winspear and will release her debut LP, patching, due out on November 14 via her new label home. The lead single is “Sickness,” a melancholy indie folk track. “This song could be taken in many ways, literally or metaphorically,” she says. “It’s about falling ill of many kinds, the common cold, perhaps lovesickness, but whatever it may be: you heal through it. This was the first song we worked on, and it came together really seamlessly.”

—

JOAN SHELLEY – “THE ORCHARD”

Here’s another lovely song from Joan Shelley’s upcoming Real Warmth.

—

S. CAREY – “WATERCRESS”

Singer, songwriter and Bon Iver collaborator S. Carey announced a new EP, Watercress, due out on October 3 via Jagjaguwar. The first single is the title track, and Carey says, “The music video for the title track, ‘Watercress’ gave me chills upon first viewing. Shot in Northwest Wisconsin, the place I call home, the images provide micro and macro views of the woods and waters that are so magical when you get up close and investigate. Just like a forest cut or burned, we all have the power to re-grow with the right care.”

—

THE UTOPIA STRONG – “HARPIES” FT KATHARINE BLAKE

Proggy UK trio The Utopia Strong have announced new album Doperider that will be out October 10 via Rocket Recordings. Say the band: “When recording we tend to have books, bits of art and interesting things lying around the place. (Kavus) had recently bought the Paul Kirchner compendium, Awaiting The Collapse. Paul’s character Dope Rider (the skeleton in question) drives around the desert, getting into all manner of high jinx and spouting cosmic philosophy. When we had created that particular track, one of our most beautiful and outré, it seemed to name itself.” First single “Harpies” features vocals by Katharine Blake (Miranda Sex Garden).

—

JORDANA – “STILL DO”

LA-based songwriter and artist Jordana announced a new EP, Jordanaland, due out November 7 via Grand Jury. “Jordanaland is definitely an escape from Americaland,” she says. “It’s an oasis from the chaos, where tampons are free, everything is easy, and Luther Vandross is vice president. It looks a lot like LA in the videos…for some reason. Weird. But it’s wherever you want it to be, just close your eyes. Pop music was definitely the goal. Self-assured, confident pop. I think the evolution came from becoming more comfortable with my voice, a more established sound, and also looking up to artists who let it all out in that way.” She’s shared the first single, “Still Do.”

—

GLAXO BABIES – “I DON’T WANT TO BE LOVED” & “MEN OF STONE”

UK post-punk vets Glaxo Babies are back and have announced, Me of Stone, their first album in more than four decades. Their dark and dubby brand of angular rock still sounds sharp on these two tracks.

—

JOEY BADA$$ – “STILL” (ft. AB-SOUL & RAPSODY)

As Joey Bada$$ gears up for a tour with Ab-Soul and Rapsody, he’s now released a new song that features both of them.

—

THOMAS DOLLBAUM – “ANGUS VALLEY”

New Orleans singer/songwriter Thomas Dollbaum will release a new EP, Drive All Night, on September 26 via Dear Life Records. Lead single “Angus Valley” is an appealingly rustic indie folk song with harmony vocals from Kate Teague.

—

PEELINGFLESH – “AUTISTIMUS PRIME” (FT. KIRIAKOS DESTOUNIS OF EMBRYECTOMY)

Rising brutal death metal/slam band PeelingFlesh will release their new EP PF Radio 2 on September 26 via Unique Leader Records, and new single “Autistimus Prime” features Kiriakos Destounis of Embryectomy. Vocalist Damonteal Harris says, “This is a track that means a lot to us mainly because of the feature. Embryectomy is one of our favorite bands and a very important band to this genre, so this is a dream collab. A feature we’ve always wanted since day 1.”

—

URBAN SPRAWL – “CULTURE VULTURE”

San Francisco hardcore punks Urban Sprawl will release their Blood Pact EP on September 5 via Convulse Records, and here’s the ripping opening track.

—

THE BESNARD LAKES – “GIVE US OUR DOMINION”

—

AUSTRA – “MATH EQUATION”

Austra will release their first new album since 2020 in November, and they’ve shared the first single, which you can read more about here.

—

SPOON – “CHATEAU BLUES” & “GUESS I’M FALLIN IN LOVE”

Spoon are back with a new two-song single which they recorded this summer in Austin with producer Justin Meldal-Johnsen (Beck, Nine Inch Nails, St. Vincent). It’s their first new music since 2022’s Lucifer on the Sofa and the first taste of their new album that will be out in 2026 (TBA).

—

HÜSKER DÜ – “THE GIRL WHO LIVES ON HEAVEN HILL,” “I APOLOGIZE,” “IF I TOLD YOU” & “FOLKLORE”
