John Cena wasn’t the first choice to play Peacemaker. However, he doesn’t seem to be bothered by that fact.
Last week, James Gunn revealed that he originally created the Peacemaker role with Dave Bautista in mind. He told Howard Stern that Bautista chose other movie projects at the time, which allowed Cena to step into the role.
“I wrote the character of Peacemaker for him, and we offered him the role,” Gunn said. “But [he] was offered two movies. We weren’t paying him a lot, so he had to go where the money was.”
Cena was recently asked about Gunn’s revelation during a new interview with GQ, which was released shortly after the fifth episode of Peacemaker‘s second season aired on Thursday. Cena said he doesn’t care where he fell on Gunn’s list. He noted that he’s lucky to have the opportunity to play the role in the first place.
John Cena says opportunity presents itself in a number of ways
“Well, I mean, first of all, I could care less about being anybody’s first, second, third or fourth pick. Opportunity in life comes to you in a myriad of different ways,” Cena explained. “And if I wanted to be salty about like, “Oh, I wasn’t first pick, that’s beneath me.” I wouldn’t have ever gotten a chance. And keep in mind I got killed off in The Suicide Squad.”
Cena says he formed a friendship with Gunn on the set of the 2021 film, and he believes that gave the director a chance to know him. Cena says it’s very easy to stereotype him based on how often he was on WWE TV. However, Gunn got to know him on a deeper level and saw what he could add to the character on the television show, which essentially retconned his character’s fate in the movie.
“I think he saw nuance in the performance he was able to bring out of me. ‘There’s more to this guy. And as a storyteller and as someone who puts words on paper and wants to bring those words to life and be prolific and have depth, I think this guy can help me out and I’d like to try to work with him again.’ So that’s why I ended up in the hospital instead of the morgue.”
Bautista also commented on not taking the role, explaining that he saw it as a “blessing in disguise.”
