John Corbett was blindsided by “And Just Like That” being canceled.
“I was as shocked as anybody that the show ended because when I finished my work on it, there was two or three episodes left to go that I didn’t get the scripts for them,” Corbett, who played Carrie’s beau Aidan Shaw in “Sex and the City” and its sequel series, told The Post while promoting his new film, “Soul on Fire.”
“So I didn’t know what the story was going to be,” the actor, 64, added. “So I watched them with joy. I’m just such a fan of everybody on that show. I loved watching it.”
Corbett noted that he’s “sad” the series isn’t continuing, especially because he feels close to all his former co-stars.
“I just love them all, My ‘Sex and the City’/’And Just Like That’ family so much,” he said. “But I was as shocked as anybody when, no one calls me up and says, ‘Hey, we’re going to not pick it up.’ I found out just like everybody else. And I was bummed out that it’s not going to continue.”
Corbett joined the “ALT” cast in Season 2 when Aidan and Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker) got back together. He made his last appearance on the show three episodes before the series finale when Carrie finally breaks up with Aidan and chooses the single life.
“Do I think Aidan and Carrie should have ended up together? I got a feeling that they… just like the old 25 years ago Aidan and Carrie’s story, I think that there’s probably a better fit for Carrie in the New York lifestyle than that,” Corbett told The Post. “They gave it the old college try.”
“So I think that was the right way to go with it,” Corbett added.
“And Just Like That,” which premiered on HBO Max in 2021, was controversial from the start, as it began by killing off Carrie’s longtime love, Big (Chris Noth), attempted to be woke with cringey storylines and introduced new characters such as Che Diaz (Sara Ramirez), who was unpopular among fans.
Two weeks before the Season 3 finale, HBO and showrunner Michael Patrick King announced the series was calling it quits.
While his time on “AJLT” is done, Corbett is staying busy starring in “Soul on Fire,” a new biopic about St. Louis native John O’Leary (Joel Courtney) who survived fire burns which covered his entire body. Corbett plays John’s father, Dennis O’Leary.
Corbett told The Post if he gave Courtney, 29, any advice on the set of the film.
“This is my 40th year in show business. I got my SAG card in 1985,” he said. “I genuinely don’t have any advice because I find then it’s a different relationship if I’m trying to [give advice]. So I’m figuring it out too.”
“Every project I ever do, there’s a lot to be learned,” the “Raising Helen” actor continued.
“I’m generally not working back to back. I might have a year off, and when I get on set, I realize how much I’ve forgotten in a year and how complicated this ‘easy job’ of just memorizing some things and standing in front of a camera can be. There’s so much more to it than that.”
