Who needs instruments when you’ve got the spirit of Snoop? The Coaches of The Voice: Battle of Champions celebrated a night out in NYC with a trip to a karaoke bar, and proved why they’re the most fun team on television. As John Legend got a hold of the mic, he rapped Snoop Dogg‘s “Drop It Like It’s Hot” at Baby Grand in the Lower East Side on February 19, with fellow Season 29 Coach Kelly Clarkson as his hype woman/ back-up dancer.
“I picked a song and I think I’m gonna smash it!” Legend said in a video shared on The Voice’s Instagram Stories before hyping up the young crowd. “I feel like rap songs that I like are oldies to you now. Are you all too young for this?”
After flawlessly rapping Snoop’s 2004 lyrics as the crowd cheered, Legend gave recognition to The Doggfather himself: “Shout out to Snoop Dogg!”

Snoop, of course, recently completed his second season as a Voice Coach, so it truly was a Voice family performance, with additional backing vocals by comedian and social media star Druski.

Also in attendance at the karaoke bar was The Voice Host Carson Daly, who couldn’t wait to ask Clarkson and Legend about their impromptu live performances during a visit to TODAY the following morning and explained why he didn’t take the stage. “[Performing] is not my job, I’m the host. I was there to support the drunk patrons,” he deadpanned.
Legend also took on the hype-man duties when Clarkson took the stage at the karaoke bar and belted out to her own hit, “Since U Been Gone,” which she promises was an audience request, not her idea. “The audience did that,” Clarkson clarified, while Legend called it the “perfect ending” to their night out.

Why John Legend loves to rap at karaoke
John Legend, Carson Daly, Kelly Clarkson, and Adam Levine smile together for The Voice Season 29 Episode 1.
Legend explained on TODAY that he has a rule when it comes to karaoke — always choose a rap song.
“I did ‘Drop It Like It’s Hot.’ My karaoke rule is I only rap because you know, I’m a professional singer, I’m an amateur rapper,” Legend told Daly during his February 20 appearance on TODAY with Clarkson, echoing a philosophy he previously explained during a Coaches’ roundtable chat.
“Once I got older, I decided I wouldn’t sing at karaoke and I would only rap,” he told his fellow Coaches. “I’m an amateur rapper; it makes me equal with all the amateur singing.”
Clarkson and Adam Levine loved his method, with Levine agreeing, “That’s a good, courteous way for a professional singer to do karaoke,” and Clarkson adding, “It always embarrassed me when people got real about it and they would really sing, so I would always do Tupac or something unexpected.”
Both Legend and Clarkson gave Levine kudos for doing “a little rap-singing” on his new album, to which Levine shrugged and said, “I don’t know how that happened.”
