Johnny Depp is in final talks to star in “Ebenezer: A Christmas Carol,” an adaptation of Charles Dickens’ classic holiday story, for Paramount Pictures. Horror auteur Ti West is directing from a script by Nathaniel Halpern, and Andrea Riseborough is set to co-star. Emma Watts is producing, and Stephen Deuters and Jason Forman are executive producers.
Should the deal close, the studio is looking to release the project on Nov. 13, 2026.
Depp will play the titular role of Ebenezer Scrooge, a misanthropic and miserly businessman in 19th century London who is visited by the ghosts of Christmas past, present and future in an effort to save himself from an afterlife of misery. The character has been a mainstay of holiday cinema for decades, including Alastair Sim in the classic 1951 adaptation, Bill Murray in 1988’s “Scrooged,” Michael Caine in 1992’s “A Muppet Christmas Carol” and Jim Carrey in 2009’s “A Christmas Carol.
