Jojo Siwa, 22, is sick of being called a “tradwife” and being accused of turning on the LGBT community after she began dating a man — Celebrity Big Brother costar Chris Hughes, 32 — in April 2025. The child star turned pop diva clapped back at criticism in a new celebrity.land interview on Saturday, Oct. 25.

“I will fight for the queer community until it’s over. It’s my people,” Siwa said when asked if she’s distancing herself from the LGBT community amid her new relationship, choosing to go by “queer” instead of “lesbian,” and pulling out of a Chicago Pride event in June due to “scheduling conflicts.”

However, she’s felt abandoned herself after going public with her new boyfriend, even making an affectionate red carpet debut on Oct. 21 at the Dancers Against Cancer Gala in Beverly Hills, CA.

“I will always make everyone around me know that they’re accepted for who they are,” she said. “The people who are criticizing me for saying that I’m moving away from the queer community — which literally is not possible for me to do — those people are not doing the same for me.”

“Now when I meet somebody that is very clearly a member of the queer community, I almost shell up really quick,” she continued. “I don’t know if they’re going to be kind or if they are going to be ruthless. I’ve had both experiences, and I’m okay with both, but I’m just learning to protect myself.”

Siwa came out as pansexual at 17 years old before identifying as lesbian. She’s been an outspoken advocate for gay rights, performing at many Pride events, being honored by GLSEN, and being named West Hollywood’s “Next Gen Pride Icon.” While on Big Brother, she explained that it feels better for her to call herself “queer” now, joking, “F–k the L, I’m going to the Q!” She doesn’t want people to forget her contributions, even as her identity evolves.

“I think that people might be quick to forget — the way that I came out, the age that I came out. The next generation that saw me be okay and saw the world be okay and then all of a sudden the moms and dads of these kids were okay, because, yeah, ‘JoJo Siwa’s a good person’ — that changed so many lives,” she said. “So what, I’m in love with a man?” she said. “That doesn’t discredit my past at all.”

Jojo Siwa Claps Back at ‘Tradwife’ Accusations

In the music video for her cover of “Bette Davis Eyes” in 2025, Siwa appeared with a dramatically changed look, swapping her long straight hair for a shorter vintage-inspired blonde wig. That video, coupled with her new relationship, earned her “tradwife” comparisons from fans and critics alike.

“Trust me, I’m the biggest hater on that one now,” she said about both the video and the cover of the 1981 Kim Carnes hit. “No one can out-hate ‘Bette Davis’ than me.”

Still, she feels like the backlash was unfair. “It was basically a Halloween costume,” she insisted of the throwback look. “People really thought I was changing everything — like, damn, it was a good wig! I don’t know where ‘tradwife’ came from.”

Still, some fans love the song, so she still plays it at concerts. “Now when I sing ‘Bette Davis Eyes,’ it’s just like, ‘Here the f–k we go,'” she said.
