Josh Duhamel opens up about his “doomsday cabin” and how it would hold up, should an end-of-the-world situation ever occur, in an exclusive interview with PEOPLE
The actor and father of two’s off-grid lakeside property is located in Minnesota

Josh Duhamel is ready for a potential apocalypse. Well, mostly.
In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE, the actor, 52, opens up about his Minnesota home — which he refers to as his “doomsday cabin” — and how it would stand up, should an end-of-the-world situation ever occur.
“Well, I have enough,” Duhamel, who has partnered with CarGurus for the company’s new video series, The Big Deal Show, says with a laugh. “Not 100%. Probably 70%.”
According to the father of two, he knows there are things he still needs to improve on to make living in the cabin fully self-sufficient — whether for a normal way of life or for riding out an armageddon.
“I could be a better hunter, I could be a better fisherman. I could stockpile a little more food supply,” he admits.

Duhamel bought an empty half-parcel of land in the North Star State — about an hour-and-a-half drive away from Fargo, N.D. — more than a decade ago.
After slowly building a rustic cabin there himself, the actor later expanded the space with more land in the years to follow. The off-grid lakeside property didn’t have electricity, running water or other amenities for a long time.

Explaining why he purchased the property in the first place, Duhamel tells PEOPLE, “I make movies and TV shows, and I love it, I truly do love it, but I had this calling.”
That calling, he further explains, was “to go and really do things with my hands again — fix things, make things, and just do the basic things that we take for granted.”

Duhamel says he especially loves spending time at the home with his family, which includes wife Audra Mari and their 19-month-old son Shepherd, plus his eldest son Axl, whom he shares with ex Fergie.
One other reason, according to the Transformers alum, is that the property offers a “respite” from “this world of massive technology,” one part of which that “scares” Duhamel is artificial intelligence (AI).
“But the truth is, yes, people want to call it a doomsday prepper thing, but it’s really not that,” he says. “I’m really more of a guy who wants to stay true to my roots, get back to the basics, hone whatever basic skills I need.”
“I don’t think that we’re in any dire situation that we have to worry about prepping for doomsday, but it is good to have some of those skills,” Duhamel tells PEOPLE.
“I was getting so far away from it for so long, that I felt like I wanted to get back to some of that,” he adds.
