The countdown is on for one of North Texas’ biggest Cinco de Mayo celebrations, and JR Gomez is ready to bring the energy.
During a recent interview on The Bo Corona Show, the frontman of JR Gomez y Los Conjunto Bandits shared his excitement for the upcoming Cinco de Mayo Festival in downtown Waxahachie, Texas, set for Saturday, May 2, 2026. The event promises a stacked lineup featuring De Parranda, Stefani Montiel, Conjunto Cats, Josh Baca of Los Texmaniacs, Sammy Garcia, and Gomez himself—culminating in a highly anticipated accordion shootout.
“It’s going to be an awesome show,” Gomez said. “Waxahachie, Texas—it’s going to be a great night. Y’all need to get out there.”
Accordion Shootout Heats Up
A major highlight of the festival will be the accordion shootout, where Gomez will face off against some of the genre’s best, including Zeke Campos of Conjunto Cats and Josh Baca of Los Texmaniacs. Gomez, a returning champion of the fan-favorite showdown, hinted at his competitive edge.
“They keep asking me to come back,” he said with a laugh. “I guess I’ve been doing it so many times. I’m the title holder—you know what I mean?”
The friendly battle is expected to showcase elite musicianship and electrify the crowd as each player brings their own style to the stage.
A Career Rooted in Tejano Greatness
Beyond the upcoming performance, Gomez reflected on his deep roots in Tejano music, revealing a career that began earlier than many fans realize.
“I actually started with La Fiebre in ’95—I was about 15,” he shared. “I was going from Lubbock to Pasadena, living with the guys.”
That early start led to a Grammy-nominated live album in the late ‘90s and opened doors to perform with some of the biggest names in Latin music. Gomez later joined Jay Perez before stepping into the spotlight with A.B. Quintanilla’s Kumbia All-Starz and Kumbia Kings and later with Jimmy Gonzalez Y Grupo Mazz.
His versatility has made him a go-to vocalist, even stepping in with La Fiebre when needed over the years.
New Music and Fresh Collaborations
While fans can expect a high-energy conjunto performance in Waxahachie, Gomez is also pushing his sound in new directions. He revealed he’s currently in the studio working on multiple collaborations, including a track with Tortilla Factory.
“I got a lot of collabs coming out this year,” he said. “We’ll talk more about that.”
Among his latest releases is “Tengo Todo Contigo,” a bolero reimagined with a modern twist. Produced and arranged by Gomez alongside Mario Ortiz, the track departs from his traditional conjunto roots.
“It’s a whole different vibe,” Gomez explained. “There’s no accordion—I got horns on there. I love this song so much.”
He also revisited “Cumbia Jalapeño,” a fun, high-energy track he co-wrote with his father that continues to resonate with fans and could see a resurgence on social media.
Ready for the Stage
Known for his dynamic performances and crowd connection, Gomez says fans can expect nothing less than a party atmosphere at the Cinco de Mayo Festival.
From his storied career to his evolving sound, Gomez continues to prove why he remains one of Tejano’s most versatile and exciting performers.
And come May 2, all eyes—and ears—will be on Waxahachie.
