Michael B. Jordan’s first Oscar win is being widely celebrated—but former judge and TV personality Judge Joe Brown is pushing back hard on what the moment represents.
Speaking on the Dana with the Data podcast, Brown made it clear he was not buying into the hype surrounding Jordan’s Best Actor victory for Sinners. While he acknowledged the milestone—“I am happy for Michael B. Jordan… he’s been in this business for 25 years”—he quickly pivoted to criticizing the Academy Awards as a whole, calling them little more than “good entertainment…if you like that kind of thing.”
Brown went further, questioning the legitimacy of the Oscars and how winners are determined. He suggested the outcomes are predictable and shaped behind the scenes, saying, “If you want to find out who’s going to win…you can go…the week before and they’ll tell you who.”
He also described Hollywood as a system that “play[s] politics” with awards, arguing that recognition often follows trends rather than originality.
At multiple points, Brown downplayed the broader significance of Jordan’s win, framing entertainment as a distraction from more pressing issues. “What difference does that make in the scheme of things?” he asked.
His remarks stand in direct contrast to the reaction from Susan Lucci, who publicly celebrated Jordan’s achievement. The All My Children icon shared a message praising both his performance and his demeanor on Hollywood’s biggest stage.
“Congratulations @michaelbjordan on your Oscar! … what a beautiful, gracious, and authentic acceptance speech you gave,” Lucci wrote, adding, “So proud to have worked with Michael on AMC!!! What a spectacular actor he is!!!”
Lucci’s support reflects a long-standing connection between the two. Jordan appeared on more than 50 episodes of All My Children between 2003 and 2006 as Reggie Montgomery, a troubled teen who is eventually adopted into the Montgomery family—placing him in close storylines with Lucci’s Erica Kane, who had been married to Reggie Montgomery.
This isn’t the first time Lucci has spoken about Jordan’s early career. In a recent interview, she described him as “always so wonderful to work with,” emphasizing that even as a teenager, he was “prepared… respectful… and authentically who he was.”
Jordan’s casting in the role followed Chadwick Boseman’s brief run as Reggie—an early career overlap that later came full circle when the two starred together in Black Panther.
