July 2026 Astrology: Theatrics, celebs and retrogrades
Jump to
And we’re off! The second half of 2026 is set to look very different from the first, and these changes will unfold all July. Right before the month began, expansive Jupiter left insular Cancer and soared into dramatic, showy Leo on June 30, where it will light up the stage until July 26, 2027.
We ourselves woke up that morning to a movie trailer parked on the street outside of our New York City apartment, and signs announcing that our mayor, Zohran Mamdani (a “celebrity” in his own right), would be filming a show, and that no cars could be parked streetside. Sometimes, it really is that literal!
But Jupiter’s Shakespearean residency in Leo will be disrupted for the first three weeks by another character—thy name be Mercury!—who steals the scene with a villainous plot to overthrow Jupiter by making a three-week retrograde backspin through moody, insular Cancer from June 29 to July 23. As the house lights dim, be extra vigilant with your words and deeds, especially those that involve technology or travel.
And then! From stage right, under the July 4 fireworks, two warriors appear—or are they mere scoundrels looking for a fight? One shall not know the truth of their duplicitous schemes until the weekend unfolds, as combative Mars and rebellious Uranus unite in Gemini.
These two hotheaded planets have not connected in Gemini since the 1940s, and together they can instigate everything from fast-moving change to prickly tempers that quickly explode into a fight. Holiday weekend heatwaves, family friction and short fuses aggravated by alcohol could make for a conflict-ridden cocktail, especially when you throw in Mercury retrograde. (What’s to come of Taylor Swift’s Madison Square Garden wedding and weekend celebrations?)
The combination of Mars and Uranus can make people hasty and accident-prone, so make a conscious effort to slow down and stay mindful. Don’t say or post anything inflammatory. On a global level, tensions could rise now too, especially since Gemini rules neighbors and negotiations, indicating extra stress in packed regions like the Middle East.
Mercury’s not the only planet to turn retrograde this month. On July 7, Neptune rolls back in Aries until December 12. Later in the month (July 26), structured Saturn also turns retrograde in Aries for roughly the same time, until December 10. Hopefully this will cool some of the boiling tempers that scrappy Aries has triggered. In these cases, a retrograde could be a good thing, since we might just take a mindful beat before reacting, calming our egos and leaving us with less, er, Ram-ifications.
The second half of July 2026’s astrology
Major indicators of our collective future start hard-launching midmonth. On July 18, progress-driven Uranus and powermonger Pluto join forces a 120-degree trine, for the first time since 1921-22. As they connect in visionary Aquarius and curious Gemini, this generation-defining combo launches a two-year wave of transformation that could redefine society as we know it. Breakthroughs in technology, communication, science and social justice movements are just the beginning.
Barbault Basket July 2026
From July 19 to 21, an ultra-rare event occurs as Jupiter, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto all occupy the same degree (four degrees) of their respective signs, activating powerful energies all at once. Jupiter in Leo will oppose Pluto in Aquarius, which is simultaneously sextile Neptune in Aries and trine Uranus in Gemini. In fire and air signs, this could unleash revolutionary forces related to technology, war or political upheaval, which we’re already seeing now—from the AI gold rush to Middle Eastern war to a sweep of Democratic Socialists elected in New York City.
This configuration has been dubbed the Barbault Basket, named after French astrologer Andre Barbault who spotted it and predicted a major shift in society would follow. Barbault died in 2019 at age 89, after making a lifetime of eerily accurate predictions (including one linked to COVID-19, which came true shortly after his passing).
A Libra, Barbault specialized in tracking long-term historical cycles of the slow-moving outer planets (Jupiter through Pluto), and the seismic societal shifts that have coincided with their meetings. With the north node entering Aquarius on July 26 (more on that in a moment), the future is at our doorstep and it won’t be ignored.
Leo season 2026 and the Lunar Nodes change signs
The showstopping events are piling up and it’s not even Leo season! That begins on July 22, and for the first time since 2015, supersizer Jupiter is in Leo at the same time as the Sun. Everything gets larger than life, especially when this maximalist mashup makes an exact conjunction on July 29, dubbed the Day of Miracles and touted as potentially being the luckiest day of the year! Not to be outdone, there’s also an Aquarius full moon on the 29th (we told you—Leo equals “the thea-TUH”), and with far less tension than early July, this could be grounds for a summer celebration.
But those Leo and Aquarius themes really get their moment on July 26. That day, the lunar nodes make their once-every-18-months shift into a new pair of signs. They’ll wrap an intense tour through Virgo (south node) and Pisces (north node) that began on January 11, 2025, putting the collective karmic spotlight on themes ruled by those signs: health and wellness (think: the GLP-1 boom), deep healing (psychedelic therapy, anyone?), and shadow expressions of both Virgo themes like data and control, and Pisces, which rules prisons (the ICE detention centers and human rights horrors committed there).
Now the north node moves into Aquarius until March 26, 2028, accompanied by the south node in Leo. It will be quite a contrast to have high-visibility Jupiter AND the under-the-radar south node in Leo at the same time, as these roles could not have more opposite missions if they tried. The waning of celebrity culture may be part of this, as power-to-the-people Aquarius directs our collective north star.
The last Aquarius north node period was from 2007-09. These nodes are particularly tied to a financial astrology cycle that’s accompanied many corrections during history.
