Friday, June 19, 2026 will mark 161 years since chattel slavery ended in the United States of America.
June 19, also known as Juneteenth, commemorates when the last slaves were freed in 1865 as well as the on-going fight for civil rights for Black Americans.
Massachusetts, under then-Gov. Charlie Baker, signed legislation establishing Juneteenth as a state holiday in 2020, a year before then-President Joe Biden made it a federal holiday in 2021.
There are several different events across the Commonwealth observing Juneteenth, ranging from fun and festive to educational and family-friendly, and sometimes all of the above. Cape Cod joins in with a handful of events, and some places will be closed, so check hours at grocery stores, town offices and more before you head out Friday.
Juneteenth cookout in Provincetown
Celebrate with food and drinks in Provincetown.
The sixth annual Juneteenth Celebration and Cookout is set for 2-5 p.m. June 19 at the Unitarian Universalist Meeting House lawn, 236 Commercial St.
The event, organized by Juneteenth Provincetown, will focus on the tradition of the Black family reunion, according to a community announcement. The celebration is free and open to the public.
Attendees can expect a variety of activities, including storytelling, music and food. The cookout will feature gumbo and red velvet cake.
The event will begin with an interfaith blessing, drawing from various religious and spiritual traditions. Dr. Ngina Lythcott will lead the calling of the ancestors, followed by an opening prayer from Pastor David Brown and the Rev. Kate Wilkinson.
Hyannis Juneteenth observance at JFK Museum
A Juneteenth observance that will include at least one speaker and music is scheduled for 2 p.m. in the outside courtyard of the John F. Kennedy Hyannis Museum at 397 Main St.
“All members of the community are invited to join us in commemorating a vital part of American History,” a press release sent from Barnstable’s Director of Communications Lynne Poyant reads. “This special occasion will provide an opportunity to learn about the history and significance of Juneteenth.”
The Cape Cod Branch of NAACP, Amplify POC Cape Cod and the JFK Hyannis Museum were credited with the announcement. Reverend Dr. Kristen Harper of the Unitarian Church of Barnstable will be the keynote speaker, and music will be provided by the band Conspiracy of Noize.
Block party on Nantucket
Nantucket will be host to a block party on York Street Saturday, June 20, the day after Juneteenth, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The day is expected to include, music, live performances, Black artists and makers, family activities and local history exhibits.
“Gather in celebration of freedom, honor the stories that shaped our community, and be part of a tradition that continues to inspire generations,” the event listing reads, adding that the celebration will honor “freedom, resilience, creativity, and connection.”
The event is presented by Museum of African American History, the Town of Nantucket, Nantucket Chamber of Commerce, and Nantucket Historical Association.

Juneteenth Day Party (Ages 21+) in Boston
This event is expected to be a huge day party in the Commonwealth’s capital, only for people 21 years old and older.
“Expect nonstop energy, live DJs, dancing, drinks, food vendors, and good vibes all day on the patio,” the EventBrite page said. “Whether you’re pulling up solo or deep with your crew, this is the place to be for Juneteenth weekend.”
It’s set to run from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. on June 19. The venue is the roof of Moxy Boston Downtown, which is located at 240 Tremont St. in Boston, Massachusetts.
Tickets cost $23.71, including fee. The VIP section RSVP costs $110.15 with the fee included.
Worcester’s Annual Black Heritage Juneteenth Festival
Worcester is set to have their Annual Black Heritage Juneteenth Festival this year on Saturday, June 20, 2026, at Institute Park from noon to 8 p.m., according to the Black Heritage Juneteenth Worcester website.
The all-ages, family-friendly event is set to have live entertainment, local vendors, food, and community.
“We are proud to have 5 local performers and 4 incredible bands on our stage this year!” An organizer Facebook post said. “Hang out all day, or be sure to stop by when your favorite performers are gracing the stage! Either way – just BE THERE!”
Should it rain, the date will be moved to June 27, 2026.

Juneteenth at Old Sturbridge Village
While Old Sturbridge Village is a historical reenactment village of rural New England in 1830s, this year they are organizing a special free-admission, family-friendly Juneteenth day that discusses abolition and what the antislavery cause looked like in New England back in the 19th century.
“Learn about female antislavery societies in New England and about Mary Avery White, a woman from Boylston who recorded these activities in her diary,” the Old Sturbridge Village website said. “View a case exhibit of antislavery writings in the Richardson House.”
Along with varied educational activities like printing an anti-slavery petition, the village will also be hosting a performance by Anthony Smith and Fully Committed, a New England gospel choir. .
