A junior doctor from Perth’s western suburbs has appeared in court charged with manslaughter following the death of a 63-year-old man near Fremantle’s entertainment strip in the early hours of Saturday.
The Perth Magistrates Court was told Christian Jack Joseph, 26, had been out in Fremantle and was returning to a friend’s home on South Terrace about 1:30am on Saturday.
The prosecution said that as he approached the house, he saw a man peering through the window and alleged that Mr Joseph pinned him to the ground and placed him in a chokehold.

The 63-year-old man became unconscious and Mr Joseph, a junior doctor at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital, performed CPR while his friend called emergency services.
The man was taken to Fiona Stanley Hospital, where he later died.
Mr Joseph, who lives in Crawley and studied medicine at the University of Western Australia, was arrested at the scene and taken into custody.

Mr Joseph’s lawyer told the court, which was packed with his family and supporters, that his alleged actions were “out of character” and he was “dedicated to saving lives”.
The magistrate refused bail, saying the matter was “too serious”.
