Justin Trudeau’s ex-wife opened up about her “lonely” Valentine’s Day.
The Former Canadian Prime Minister and Sophie Grégoire Trudeau announced their separation after 18 years of marriage in August 2023. The two share three children: son Xavier Trudeau in 2007, daughter Ella-Grace in 2009, and son Hadrien in 2014.
Sophie opened up to her Closer Together newsletter subscribers about how being “uncoupled” at 50 “doesn’t feel amazing.” She wrote, “Often, it’s a recalibration – a moment where the noise quiets enough for us to hear our own voice again.”
Sophie continued, “For millions of women (and men!) the answer hasn’t always been simple. We’ve been taught – sometimes gently, sometimes harshly – that our bodies, our emotions, our authenticity need adjusting to be accepted. When we spend years reshaping ourselves to fit in, our nervous system learns vigilance instead of ease.
“In many ways, self-love is being aware of our defense mechanisms and adaptive behaviors. It’s about unlearning them and choosing to change some of our emotional habits. Self-love is a practice. At its core, it’s safety. And safety comes from presence.”
This is Sophie’s first Valentine’s Day single. After her divorce from Justin, she moved in with Dr. Marcos Bettolli, an Argentine-born pediatric surgeon at the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario in Ottawa.
Marcos’ estranged wife Ana Remonda alleged in her April 2023 divorce petition in the Ontario Superior Court of Justice, Family Court, that her husband had “re-partnered with a high-profile individual who attracts significant media attention, and presents significant security considerations, to which the children are exposed while in their father’s care.”
Sophie and Marcos have since split.
Justin has also moved on and started dating pop star Katy Perry. The two sparked romance rumors in July 2025 following a public outing in Montreal, a month after Katy and Orlando Bloom announced they were ending their engagement and separating after nine years of on-and-off dating. The singer and actor share a daughter and have focused on co-parenting after the 2025 split.
Katy and Justin were then seen together in September 2025 and made their relationship public by late October 2025, with the singer celebrating her birthday in Paris with the former Canadian prime minister.
The two seem to be going strong, as the singer last posted a picture of herself and Justin on Instagram in January. While Justin smiles at the camera, wearing sunglasses and a white tee, Katy is seen kissing him on the cheek.
