When Deepika Padukone took an exit from Nag Ashwin’s Kalki 2898 AD sequel and Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s Spirit, one of the main reasons was that she only wanted to work in 8-hour shifts so she could be home for her baby daughter, Dua. This demand reignited a debate in Bollywood about balancing work and life. Many celebrities came forward to support Deepika.

Kangana Ranaut recently told ANI, “I don’t think there should be an issue created out of this because if you see where she is coming from, she has earned that place. She has a daughter, she’s a mother now, and the top-most actress. If today she is keen to work for eight hours, she has earned it.”

Ananya Panday told The Hollywood Reporter India, “I’ve worked with her before she became a mother; there was no such thing like that. She was working, coming to workshops, no complaints, no asking for anything, and that sort of way. Now she’s a mother, and this is what she needs, to kind of be present with her child at a time during the first two years… Even Kareena did that, she changed the game for all of the girls coming after her. So I think it’s okay to have a conversation with your producer, to find a balance between it’s a private conversation you must have, and it’s something that can be worked around…”

Kareena Kapoor Khan said in the same chat, “As a woman, if you want to give time to your children, you should have the freedom to say, ‘This is what I want. I can only work this number of hours.'” However, she did conclude that while these seem acceptable conditions, they must be said, “Before a film starts.”

Supriya Pathak told Bollywood Bubble, “As an actor, I am the one facing the audience. And when you face an audience, you need to be prepared. If you don’t give me the time to prepare myself, how will I face them? So I think it’s very important that actors, whether male or female, are given the time to prepare.”

Anubhav Sinha told Shubhankar Mishra, Anubhav Sinha said, “I don’t believe in gossip. I’ve never really worked with Deepika, and barely met her once at a party years ago. But I asked people who have worked with her, and they said she’s a delightful actress to work with.” He added, “If any actor’s demands are unreasonable, don’t work with them. Why create a controversy? Every household has disagreements, but you don’t go to the terrace and shout about it. I think it’s unfair the way this has been blown up.”

Ashutosh Rana told The Free Press Journal, “I believe that creative work should not be done beyond eight hours. If you want the best of the best, you must understand this. Eight hours is a good amount of time; work can be completed in eight hours. If your pre-production is strong, if you are sorted, and if you have clarity about what you are going to shoot, then believe me – you can create magic in eight hours.”
