The Kansas City Royals scored 20 runs on a franchise-record 27 hits in their 20-1 win over the Toronto Blue Jays on Friday night, with their previous record being 26 against the Detroit Tigers on September 4, 2004.

Kansas City had 10 batters record at least two hits, with six of them recording at least two or more RBI and seven of them crossing home at least twice.

They finished the game going 13-of-25 with runners in scoring position, totaling seven doubles and three home runs, including catcher Salvador Perez‘s 30th of the year – also during his bobblehead night.

They started off the game by scoring seven runs on seven hits off of Blue Jays veteran starting pitcher Max Scherzer, who couldn’t finish the inning.

They went up 10-1 after scoring three runs in the third, then the seventh and eighth innings are where they continued to pour it on. Luke Maile hit an RBI single before rookie Jac Caglianone sent out his seventh home run of the season to put the Royals up 14-1 – and it came off Blue Jays catcher Tyler Heineman, who gave up 10 of the 20 runs and 13 of the 27 hits.

They would eventually score six more runs in the seventh inning off a Maile two-run double, Adam Frazier RBI single, Caglianone RBI single, Michael Massey RBI single, and a John Rave RBI single.

Royals starting pitcher Michael Lorenzen earned his sixth win of the year, going 7.2 innings, giving up just one earned run on three hits while walking three and striking out four.

Kansas City improve to 77-77 as they sit seven games back of a Wild Card spot with eight games left to go in their season. Meanwhile, the Blue Jays fall to 89-65, but still hold a 3.0-game lead over the New York Yankees (86-68) thanks to them losing to the Baltimore Orioles on Friday as well.
