Friday night’s game saw a narrow 7-6 victory for the Royals which was credited to Daniel Lynch IV on the mound following one inning of throwing in which he gave up two earned runs and struck out two batters. Vinnie Pasquantino and Salvador Perez each finished the game with two hits and two RBI, Perez hitting a two-run double and Pasquantino hitting an RBI single and solo home run. Jac Caglianone also hit a homer, his third of the season. The team finished the game with 10 hits.
In back-and-forth game between the two teams, the Mariners just came up short. The offense had timely hits that allowed them to keep pace with the Royals and Julio Rodríguez led the team at the plate. Rodríguez went 2-for-4 with four RBI after hitting a two-run homer in the bottom of the first and another two-run homer in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game up at 6-6. Also hitting home runs were Randy Arozarena and Connor Joe. The team will look for more offensive performances like Friday’s in game two, but will need to tighten up the pitching to even the series.
The Royals will put the ball in Seth Lugo’s hand on Saturday night. Lugo is currently 1-1 on the year with an ERA of 2.63 and 31 strikeouts. The Mariners will counter with Emerson Hancock who is 2-1 with an ERA of 2.86 and 32 strikeouts.
