Karthik Subbaraj reacts as ‘Jana Nayagan’ release faces delay
South Indian actor Vijay’s film Jana Nayagan was set to release on January 9, 2026, but the makers postponed the release due to unavoidable circumstances beyond our control. Fans expressed disappointment on social media, sharing their views on the delay.
Amid the reactions, writer-director Karthik Subbaraj posted an open letter on his X(formerly Twitter) account, describing the current time as tough for the cinema industry.
Karthik Subbaraj wrote, “Some thoughts just as a lover of CINEMA!! No theatres for a low budget indie film #Salliyargal. Censor delay caused postponement of a big budget, big star film like Vijay Sir’s #JanaNayagan slated to release tomorrow… Bookings are yet to open in many centres due to the issue of certificate for another big budget film #Parasakthi slated to release day after tomorrow… Tough times for cinema!!”
He also highlighted the challenges faced by indie films. “Theatres need to be more supportive for low budget films… Big Satellite & OTT players are not keen to buy indie films, leaving theatres as the only source of revenue… Not giving theatres for low budget films literally means killing cinema!!”
The Mahaan writer further commented on censorship timelines. He wrote,“For big budget films, the strict timeline rules for censors (India & overseas) are hard to follow. They put pressure on filmmakers during post-production. The ideal time for a film to be fully completed is three months before release, which is highly impossible for many reasons. This has to be streamlined for the boards, producers, and stars. Otherwise, postponement of big films on festival dates will eventually kill the industry!!.”
He concluded, “Please let’s all together in the film fraternity keep aside fan wars, political reasoning, personal agendas, hate campaigns & join together to do something optimistic to save the art…Save cinema.”
The official note from the makers stated, “Due to unforeseen circumstances, the initial release of Jana Nayagan, scheduled for 9 January 2026, has been postponed to a later date. We are currently awaiting further updates from the production team. Once the new release date is confirmed, official announcements will be shared through our authorised platforms.”
