The Princess of Wales has emphasized the critical role of nurturing children as part of her ‘life’s work’ via her foundation, as she returns fully to royal duties after her cancer battle.

The future queen has played an integral part in producing a collection of animated films designed to assist those working with families and caregivers in underscoring the crucial nature of social and emotional growth, reports the Mirror.

In June, the princess engaged with two artists involved in the project and convened with early years professionals during a creative session at her Royal Foundation Centre for Early Childhood. Her deep commitment to the film series has been hailed by Kensington Palace and royal sources as a pivotal move by her centre to continue promoting the significance of early childhood development.

In celebration of the release, Kate, aged 43, remarked: “Early childhood has been recognised as the golden opportunity to build strong foundations for future life, health and happiness.”

She further explained, “The new animated films from The Centre of Early Childhood showcase how adults can create nurturing, loving interactions with children, helping to foster social and emotional development during their earliest years.”

Kate also highlighted the lasting impact of these formative experiences, stating, “These core social and emotional skills are essential in forming healthy relationships and are fundamental building blocks that can carry us through life. That is why we want to raise the awareness of, and celebrate, the extraordinary value of everyday moments of connection which matter more than ever in a rapidly changing world.

“Early childhood offers a sacred opportunity to transform our societies for the better and by nurturing these skills in our babies and children, we will be raising a younger generation better equipped to face the future.”

The opening film features artwork by Maggie Stephenson, the creative professional who collaborated with the Centre to create the Shaping Us Framework, with animation by Orange and production by Making Pictures.

The collection brings together the artistic expertise of a diverse group of talented illustrators and animators from across the globe, alongside the academic excellence of two of Britain’s foremost authorities in child development, Professor Peter Fonagy and Professor Sam Wass, as well as the extensive knowledge of an advisory panel of early childhood specialists serving families throughout the UK.

Foundation research showed that while 94 percent of the UK population recognizes that social and emotional abilities are crucial for happiness in adulthood, 42 percent possess minimal or no knowledge about how these capabilities emerge during early childhood.

The goal of these animated productions, which are also offered in Welsh and with British Sign Language, is to enhance that comprehension, and through this effort, strengthen developmental outcomes for infants and young children. The topics discussed encompass the development of an emotionally healthy brain, recognizing and managing emotions, handling intense feelings collectively, reciprocal interactions, supporting early learning, and fostering connection spaces.

The center is collaborating with universities, charities, and professional bodies to incorporate these films into training programs and practices nationwide.

Earlier this year, The Centre for Early Childhood unveiled the Shaping Us Framework, which outlines the social and emotional skills that leading academics and practitioners deem crucial for lifelong health and happiness.

These skills include our capacity to regulate our emotions, concentrate our thoughts, and interact with others. Studies indicate that these abilities play a fundamental role in shaping the adults we become.

They are also recognized as influencing our decision-making, how we treat others, our resilience in dealing with life’s highs and lows, and the quality of our relationships.

These skills contribute to leading a healthy, happy life and begin to develop during the earliest days, weeks, and months of our lives.

Over 25 organizations are already partnering with The Centre for Early Childhood to assist practitioners in utilizing the films in their work, ensuring they effect genuine change in the quality of services for families. This ranges from sharing them within their networks to integrating the films into their training programs.
