If you think the world is missing something, then go out and make it. That’s what singer and guitarist Katy Guillen did when she started her all-female indie rock band Katy Guillen & The Drive, coming to Falmouth Oct. 25.
“It’s like being the thing that you want to see more of in the world,” says Guillen, as she checks in during a break from touring. Based out of Kansas City, Missouri, Guillen just finished a West Coast trek of shows in support of her new album “Make That Sound.” She and her life partner/drummer Stephanie Williams will hit the road again when they play at Grumpy’s Pub in Falmouth on Saturday.
Kathy Guillen & The Drive has made it a point to empower women in the music world, both on and off stage, such as working with female producer Megan McCormick in Nashville on the group’s newest album.
Guillen says that she didn’t initially intend to create an all-female environment around her music for any other reason than those were who her bandmates were, but she discovered that the all-female lineup was having an effect on other women that she wasn’t expecting.

“We started to really enjoy that type of energy on stage and noticed at shows young girls coming up or older women coming over and saying ‘I love the all-female energy,’” she says. “It’s just a different type of thing.”
“Make That Sound” is Katy Guillen & The Drive’s second full-length album, following 2022’s “Another One Gained” and a couple of EPs before that. The songs on “Make That Sound” combine bluesy riff-rock (“What If” and the driving “Can’t Live Without It”) with dreamy indie pop (“Staying Awake”).
Guillen gives shout outs to the women in her life, including her mother, sister and partner. There’s also “Goodbye Charlie,” a heartfelt tribute to her dog who passed away. Guillen copes with the loss as she sings, “Seasons pass, I found some traction at last/I’m getting there and I’m keeping you.”
Guillen says that it’s important to her that the band and its music be a positive impact on the lives of the women she knows and the community as a whole, especially young women.
“I think like it’s cool for them to be able to see an all-women rock band that likes to shred,” she says. “We really do love to rock out. I feel like it’s something that I wish I had had a little bit more of when I was coming up. All you can do is leave as positive a mark as possible no matter what ends up happening.”
