A new Katy Perry single just dropped, but is it a “California Gurls”-level smash hit? Fans are loving “Bandaids,” which Perry debuted along with a Final Destination-like music video.
The song’s lyrics are about coming to terms with the end of a relationship after holding on to it for so long. “Got so used to you letting me down / No use tryna send flowers now / Telling myself you’ll change, you don’t / Band-Aids over a broken heart,” Perry sings in the chorus.
In one lyric, Perry hints that a lack of effort by her partner was what doomed the romance, singing, “It’s not that complicated / To ask me how my day is / I’m flatlining trying to save this.”
The music video features Perry constantly in serious peril. In the opening scene, the singer drops what appears to be a wedding band into a garbage disposal, only to accidentally turn it on as she reaches for the ring. Later, in a moment straight out of Final Destination 2, she attempts to dodge logs after they drop from a truck on the highway.
Toward the end, she sings about how the “love that we made was worth it in the end,” as she gets stuck in the path of a train, before seeing a daisy lying near the tracks. That daisy inspires Perry to jump out of the way and save herself. Perry’s 5-year-old daughter, whom she parents with ex-fiancé Orlando Bloom, is named Daisy, and the title of the 2020 single off of her Smile album is “Daisies.”
Fans showed a lot of love for the music video in the comments section, where many applauded it for its nostalgic sound. One fan wrote, “Sounds like 2010. Sounds like my childhood. I am sobbing. She’s SO back. Such a great song!”
Another fan declared that “Katy Perry has finally returned to the pop rock sound that makes her so special. I’m SO seated for this era.” And another said that the song was a “great comeback” track, calling it a mix of the singles “Wide Awake” and “Never Really Over.”
Others found the daisy moment in the music video sweet, with one writing, “Daisy being her reason to keep going … [I love you] Katy.”
Perry announced the new song in an Instagram post on Nov. 4 that included a photo of herself with tiny cuts all over her face to match the track’s theme.
The “Firework” singer is currently in the middle of the U.K. and European leg of her Lifetimes tour, her first time on the road since her Witness tour concluded in 2018. The Lifetimes setlist features music from her 2024 album 143 as well as previous hits.
“Bandaids” is Perry’s first single since her breakup with Bloom. Reps confirmed their split after nine years together in July, stating that the two have been “shifting their relationship over the past many months to focus on co-parenting.”
Perry recently made headlines for stepping out with former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, with whom she has been linked since the summer. While neither Perry nor Trudeau has directly addressed a possible romance, Perry acknowledged her relationship status during a recent stop on the tour after a fan in the audience proposed to her.
“This guy is trying to get me to marry him and he has a ring in his hand,” she told the crowd, per a TikTok video of the moment posted on Oct. 31 . “No. I am dating someone else for crying out f***ing loud.”
