Katy Perry is getting candid in her latest release, opening up about the fear and vulnerability behind it. The 41-year-old pop icon shared that her new single, “Bandaids,” came from a place of deep emotional turmoil, a track fans believe draws inspiration from her breakup and past relationship with ex-fiancé Orlando Bloom.

Katy Perry reveals why she ‘struggled’ to put new song ‘Bandaids’ out in emotional post

In an emotional Instagram post shared on November 9, Perry admitted that releasing the song wasn’t an easy decision. “I struggled for months with the idea of putting this song out,” she wrote. “Even after all these years, it can be scary to be vulnerable… but hopefully the lyrics of this song resonate with someone going through what I have been through. Maybe they won’t feel so alone and will find the strength to keep going like I have.”

Released on November 6, “Bandaids” explores the pain and acceptance that come with the end of a relationship, one Perry says she tried desperately to hold together. “Hand to God, I promise I tried,” she sings. “There’s no stone left unturned / It’s not what you did, it’s what you didn’t / You were there but you weren’t.”

In the music video for the single, Perry drops a ring down a garbage disposal and injures her hand while trying to retrieve it, later appearing in a series of clips where she continues to hurt herself in various ways. Despite the pain reflected in her lyrics, the “Roar” singer expressed no regret over her nine-year relationship, particularly because it led to the birth of their daughter. “If I had to do it all over again / I would still do it all over again,” she later sings in the song, with the accompanying video clip showing a daisy in the frame. “The love that we made was worth it in the end.”
