After a relatively quiet edition of baseball’s Winter Meetings, the Kansas City Royals made a significant splash in free agency on Thursday night.
The Royals reportedly agreed to terms with veteran outfielder Lane Thomas, per multiple outlets. The move comes hours after Mike Yastrzemski — who played with KC this past season and was one of the Royals’ top free agents — signed with the Atlanta Braves.
The Athletic’s Will Sammon was first to report the Royals’ acquisition of Thomas.
Thomas, 30, spent the last two seasons with the Cleveland Guardians. He hit .160 with four home runs and 11 RBIs in 39 games. Injuries derailed a productive 2025 campaign, as Thomas dealt with a bone bruise in his right wrist and a plantar fasciitis.
In September, Thomas underwent right-foot surgery and missed the remainder of the season. He is expected to make a full recovery and be ready soon for baseball activities.
When healthy, Thomas is an offensive spark plug. He is just two years removed from posting a career-high 28 home runs with the Washington Nationals. The Royals hope he can return to form in 2026.
Thomas signed a one-year deal worth $5.25 million, per MLB.com insider Mark Feinsand. The contract also includes $1 million in incentives.
The Royals looked for outfield help at the Winter Meetings in Orlando. They wanted to find an everyday left fielder and a potential right-handed option this offseason.
Thomas has positional versatility and can play all three outfield spots. He also produced great splits against left-handed pitching — he’s a career .292 against southpaws with an .859 OPS.
The Royals could deploy Thomas in multiple ways. He brings a speed element — 32 steals in 2024 — and could thrive at spacious Kauffman Stadium. And he figures to add more veteran presence to a clubhouse featuring the likes of young stars Bobby Witt Jr., Vinnie Pasquantino and Maikel Garcia and club legend Salvador Perez.
The Royals will continue to scour the free-agent market for outfielders. KC is reportedly still interested in Austin Hays and Harrison Bader.
The Royals’ front office also continues to work the phones for potential trade targets, such as Boston Red Sox star Jarren Duran, Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Teoscar Hernandez and St. Louis Cardinals standout Brendan Donovan.
The Royals had yet to officially announced the Thomas signing as of 7 p.m. Thursday. Once he’s added to the KC roster, he’ll be player No. 39 of 40.
