Happy 250th birthday to America, KCSN subscribers!

There is not a lot of good news to report from the Royals’ side of things this week, but there is plenty happening across the Kansas City sports landscape. Here is where things stand.

Royals Report: A Rough Week Raises Real Questions

It was about as bad a week as the Royals could have had.

Kansas City dropped the first two in Chicago against the White Sox before coming home to get swept by the Tampa Bay Rays, finishing the week 1-5. The Royals now sit at 35-53, firmly in last place in the AL Central, 11 games back with one month to go before the MLB trade deadline. They hold the worst record in the American League and sit 10 games out of the Wild Card. At this point in the season, it is hard to argue that the path forward is anything other than an eyes-on-2027 approach.

The one bright spot in the lineup this week was rookie catcher Carter Jensen, who remains one of the few genuine feel-good stories on this roster. Jensen blasted two more home runs and drove in five runs, giving him 13 on the season, second on the team, and 47 RBI, which leads the club.

On the mound, Seth Lugo notched another quality start with six innings and three earned runs, but Michael Wacha once again stood alone as the staff’s most reliable arm. The veteran right-hander allowed just one earned run over 7.2 innings and has quietly cemented himself as the clear ace of this rotation. His 3.31 ERA leads the staff by nearly a full run, and his 108.2 innings pitched paces the team by more than a dozen frames. He is 5-5 on the season, but the record does not tell the story of how good he has been.

On a more somber note, opening-day ace Cole Ragans saw his injury-riddled season come to a definitive end this week after undergoing UCL repair surgery, which carries a 10- to 12-month recovery timeline. It is a significant blow to the rotation’s long-term outlook as well, pushing his return well into next season at the earliest.

The Royals are off Friday night due to the World Cup schedule before hosting the Philadelphia Phillies for three this weekend, then heading to New York to face the Mets Tuesday through Thursday.

Nick Bolton Heading to the Mizzou Athletics Hall of Fame

In a feel-good story out of the Chiefs’ building this week, linebacker Nick Bolton was announced as a member of the 2026 Mizzou Athletics Hall of Fame class. In a fitting touch, it was his current head coach, Andy Reid, who delivered the news. Reid, who coached the Tigers’ offensive line from 1989 to 1991, clearly still has a soft spot for Columbia.

Bolton, who last suited up for Mizzou in 2020, had a decorated career in parts of three seasons with the Tigers. As a sophomore, he earned First Team All-SEC honors while recording 100 tackles, eight passes defended, two interceptions, and a sack. His junior season was even more impressive, earning First Team All-SEC honors, Second Team All-America recognition, and a Butkus Award finalist nod before declaring for the NFL Draft.

The Kansas City native was then drafted by the Chiefs in 2021, won two Super Bowls, became a defensive captain, and delivered one of the most memorable plays in franchise history, returning a fumble for a touchdown against the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LVII. It is a well-deserved honor for one of the better stories the program has produced in recent memory.

World Cup: USA Advances, Arrowhead Wraps Up Group Stage

The United States Men’s National Team kept the run going this week, defeating Bosnia-Herzegovina 2-0 in Santa Clara, CA to advance to the round of 16.

Folarin Balogun opened the scoring just before halftime, and Malik Tillman sealed it with a late free kick. The finish was more dramatic than the scoreline suggests. Around the 63rd minute, Balogun was issued a controversial red card that did not appear malicious or intentional but was confirmed after review, leaving the USA to play the final stretch with 10 men. Tillman’s goal came shortly after, making it all the more impressive. The red card also means Balogun will miss the round-of-16 matchup against Belgium, a real loss for head coach Mauricio Pochettino’s attack.

On the Kansas City front, the Algeria-Austria group stage finale at Arrowhead turned out to be a thriller, ending in a 3-3 draw that was kind enough to send both teams through to the knockout stage. Both have since been eliminated, Austria by Spain and Algeria by Switzerland, but it was a memorable night at the stadium.

The second-to-last World Cup match in Kansas City takes place tonight, as Colombia faces Ghana at 8:30 p.m. in the final day of the round of 32. A quarterfinal is still to come at Arrowhead in the weeks ahead.
