Kelli Giddish met her husband Beau Richards when he was her driver on the set of SVU
“We prayed for stoplights,” Giddish tells PEOPLE of first falling in love with Richards

Kelli Giddish has Law & Order: Special Victims Unit to thank for introducing her to her husband.
Giddish, who rejoined the long-running NBC show as a series regular this season, first met her now-husband Beau Richards when he was her driver.
“[He’s] just one of those people that you sit beside and you’re like, ‘I’m fine being completely quiet and I’m just comfortable,'” Giddish tells PEOPLE while chatting about the SVU season 27 finale, which airs Thursday, May 14. “And he drove me for a while, and we became friends, and then all of a sudden we were like, ‘Wait a minute, I miss you when I don’t see you.'”

Giddish says their friendship evolved slowly into a “magical” relationship, and they even spent the pandemic together before getting married in 2021.
“I know it was a really hard time for a lot of people, but I think a lot of people took advantage of it like we did to go, ‘We don’t have work to go to; we just have these beautiful kids and me and you and time,'” she says.
Giddish and Richards share son Oldie, 2, who was born in June 2023. Giddish is also mom to sons Ludo, 10, and Charlie, 7, whom she shares with her ex-husband, Lawrence Faulborn.
“I feel really lucky now,” says Giddish. “[Beau’s] such a great father, such a great stepfather.”
Giddish resides in New York with her family given her long-running tenure on SVU, and now with a break from filming, she’s ready to soak up the nice weather and time with loved ones. In fact, just recently, Giddish says she was overwhelmed with gratitude— so much so that she called Beau.

“It’s funny, here in New York, we’ve had a long, intense winter. And about three weeks ago, it finally hit 70 degrees, and I remember I dropped off our two-year-old and I called Beau and I just left him a message and I go, ‘I just want to tell you, I’m just so grateful for you. And I love our boys and I love our life and I’m just so, so happy. All right. I love you. Have a good day.’ And I was like, ‘What got into me?’ The sun! The sun is out!” she recalls, laughing.

Giddish and Richards still cross paths on set sometimes, she says, and they always think back to how they first fell in love.
“Every now and then he still drives me home, and then we laugh about how much we prayed for stoplights when we were first meeting. I know,” Giddish says, acknowledging the sweet sentiment. “It’s true though. It’s so true. We were like, ‘God, why is every light green tonight? We need more time.”
