Kelly Clarkson is returning to television less than two months after the death of her ex-husband, Brandon Blackstock, who died at age 48 following a lengthy cancer battle.
NBC announced Wednesday that The Kelly Clarkson Show will begin taping its seventh season the week of September 8, with the premiere set for September 29 from the show’s New York City studio.
The season opener will highlight heroic rescue efforts during the July floods in Texas, a cause Clarkson had planned to support before tragedy struck.
Blackstock, a talent manager and father to Clarkson’s two children, River, 11, and Remington, 9, died in early August at his home in Butte, Montana, while under hospice care.
The Silver Bow County Coroner confirmed the cause of death as melanoma, a form of skin cancer, and ruled it as natural causes.
“I am sincerely sorry to everyone who bought tickets to the shows, and I so appreciate your grace, kindness and understanding.”
Clarkson and Blackstock married in 2013 and divorced in 2022 after nearly seven years together.
Blackstock was previously married to Melissa Ashworth, with whom he had two older children. At the time of his passing, he was in a relationship with girlfriend Brittney Marie Jones.
Though Clarkson has not publicly commented on his death, a source close to the singer described the ordeal as “draining, exhausting, emotional [and] devastating.”
According to the insider, much of Clarkson’s schedule during Blackstock’s illness was arranged around allowing the children time with their father.
“She is a workhorse,” the source said. “Hard work is all she knows. She hates disappointing people. But nothing compares to a situation like this.”
