It’s been two months since Kelly Clarkson’s ex-husband, Brandon Blackstock, passed away. He died at the age of 48 after a battle with melanoma. Now, the 43-year-old pop star is subtly signaling to fans that she’s moving forward.
In an Oct. 8 Instagram post, Clarkson shared a panoramic snapshot of her Las Vegas residency, Studio Sessions. She was standing onstage singing before a large crowd with scores of illuminated phone screens. She wrote in the caption, “VEGAS! We’re back in one month, who’s joining us?” Clarkson and her band are set to return to The Colosseum at Caesars Palace beginning Nov. 7 for a two-weekend run.

It is a stark contrast from her Aug. 6 post, where she abruptly canceled the “remainder of the August Studio Sessions dates in Las Vegas.” She wrote to her fans, “While I normally keep my personal life private, this past year, my children’s father has been ill, and at this moment, I need to be fully present for them. I am sincerely sorry to everyone who bought tickets to the shows, and I so appreciate your grace, kindness, and understanding.”
Fans understood her desire to be with daughter River, 11, and son Remington, 9, in their time of need. That family emergency became very clear when Blackstock’s representative announced to People on Aug. 7: “It is with great sadness that we share the news that Brandon Blackstock has passed away. Brandon bravely battled cancer for more than three years. He passed away peacefully and was surrounded by family. We thank you for your thoughts and prayers and ask everyone to respect the family’s privacy during this very difficult time.”
Clarkson returned to taping Season 29 of The Voice after a short hiatus, and the season premiere of The Kelly Clarkson Show debuted on Monday, Sept. 29. Her show’s music director, Jason Halbert, spoke with USA Today and described their first day back as an “emotional” one for the cast and crew because they were navigating Clarkson’s grief while honoring the heroes from the July flash floods in Texas.
“I don’t know how (Clarkson) compartmentalizes watching that segment, super emotional, and then jumping into, like, making crafts with kids, and then jumping into emoting a song,” Halbert shared while noting that she will likely deal with her grief through music.
“A lot happened for us all in the last year, on personal and career levels,” he added. “You’re going to see some songs reflect things that maybe she wouldn’t talk about verbally in a sitting on the couch interview.”
The death of Blackstock after their contentious divorce was a series of mixed emotions for her because at the end of the day, he was her children’s father. “She separated her personal feelings about Brandon after the divorce, and she progressed from there,” a source told the Daily Mail in August. “While it was frustrating to deal with him in divorce, once the cancer came into the situation, she felt bad; it took a toll on her because she had to think of her kids’ feelings and to protect them.”
Now, it’s time for Clarkson to slowly move forward and do something that brings her joy — and her Vegas residency is a great start on that journey.
