Mark Consuelos has revealed painful details about Kelly Ripa‘s recent oral surgery, which he revealed Monday morning led to his wife and cohost’s absence from Live With Kelly & Markfor the time being.
With Jonas Brothers musician Kevin Jonas joining Consuelos to fill in for Ripa, the actor explained to viewers why his wife wasn’t joining him at the table this week.
“Kelly sends her love,” Consuelos said. “It’s a gum graft surgery, and her dentist said five years ago, ‘You can do it in about five years,’ and she joked, like, ‘I didn’t think I’d still be on the air in five years.’”
Consuelos confirmed that Ripa is “doing great” despite a few setbacks, including extreme pain and the fact that “she’s not allowed to talk” as she heals.

“That’s got to be the hardest thing that she’s ever done,” Jonas joked, while Consuelos said that he’s “trying to keep her” in line and following “the directions” that her medical team gave her.
“There’s a list of things that you’re not allowed to do: Talking, talking, talking!” Consuelos said. “She has to eat soft food, can’t suck out of a straw, you can’t examine it, which means pulling down the lip. Last night, she was like, ‘Can you look!?’”
He finished by telling the audience that Ripa “famously doesn’t feel pain” and that she has a high enough tolerance that she “doesn’t really use the novocaine” when undergoing dental procedures.
“But, this one hurts, so I know it’s bad,” Consuelos said.
Entertainment Weekly has reached out to a representative for Ripa at Live With Kelly and Mark for comment on her condition and a return date.
Other Live personalities have also opened up about various health occurrences this year, with the show’s longtime emcee and resident DJ, Déjà Vu, revealing in April that she was diagnosed with Bell’s palsy, which causes facial paralysis.
Also in April, Consuelos revealed on air that his father, Saul Consuelos, died while the couple were on a spring hiatus from the talk show.

“Two weeks ago today, my father passed away after a long bout with an illness. He passed away peacefully. Such a fascinating man,” Consuelos said through tears at the top of the pair’s return to the air.

“You were blessed more because you knew him his whole life. I only got to know my father-in-law for 31 years. But they were the best 31 years of my life,” Ripa, Consuelos’ wife of nearly 30 years, added. “I can honestly say I will miss him every day for the rest of my life, as I know you will, as our children will. He was the greatest person I’ve ever known. He really is so symbolic of everything you are.”
