According to Deadline, Kenneth Branagh is set to voice Goblin in the new A24 film set to be a cross between E.T. and Ted. This will be an interesting endeavor for the classically trained actor who is known for his roles in movies centered around plays like Hamlet, Henry V, and Much Ado About Nothing. The fact that he is set to star as the incredibly foul-mouthed Goblin highlights the already absurd nature of this film.
Skyler Gisondo, who played Jimmy Olsen in Superman, is in talks to play Goblin’s human companion. Obviously, since it is a literal Goblin, Branagh will only be providing the character’s voice. However, there is still something absurd about having such a talented actor voice such a disgusting character. Gisondo has yet to fully commit to the role, likely do the the absurdly raunchy nature of the script. One can only imagine what Branagh would’ve had to have been given to even consider the role in the first place, so maybe with enough money, Gisondo will be forced to accept.
The film itself is described as E.T. meets Ted, and features an “anatomically correct” Goblin with a human sidekick. The implications of this are endlessly ridiculous on their own, and there’s no telling what David Mikalson has in store for audiences. Given the brazen nature of most modern film’s fans should go into this film expecting to be at least somewhat scarred.
Although no one expected Branagh to take the role, only time will tell to see if Gisondo will follow suit. The budget for this A24 film was already smaller to begin with, yet it has been given a recent boost. Gisondo might also be hesitant to accept the role because of existing conflicts with other DC projects he has going on, like Superman: Man of Tomorrow.
Warner Bros. Pictures
The project has yet to be given an official title, but fans can expect some innuendo-filled sci-fi reference that will surely give fans a taste of what they can expect in the upcoming film. Until A24 was willing to pick up the project, many scoffed at Mickelson’s somewhat crazy script. Yet, A24 saw potential and even increased the film’s overall budget. Only time will tell whether or not this was a worthy investment.
As of now, Kenneth Branagh is the only actor to be confirmed for the upcoming “Ted Meets E.T.” project. Skyler Gisondo has yet to commit and could bow out at any time due to scheduling conflicts. The film will either be one of the most incredible standout comedies of whatever year it airs in or be laughably bad; there can simply be no in-between.
