Fans have watched Keri Russell grow and evolve in the spotlight, and she recently got real when sharing her thoughts on plastic surgery and intense beauty standards in Hollywood.
While speaking to People about her role of Kate Wyler in season 3 of Netflix’s The Diplomat, Russell, 49, said she was “totally empathetic” about the beauty standards her character has faced as a woman in the public eye.
“It’s such a weird thing being a woman. Everyone has an opinion about the way you look, the way you dress, the way your hair is,” Russell added.
Russell knows what it’s like to face backlash about her appearance. While she was rising to fame as the titular character on The WB’s Felicity in the late ’90s, she faced backlash after she chopped off her famous long curly hair for a bold pixie cut.
“It’s just the nature of our society. But I also find it really enjoyable, I mean, it’s like a fun thing to play,” she said of playing Kate in The Diplomat. “I like how cranky she is about it, and how she’s always trying to fight people about it, and is rude about it. I love it. I find it delightful.”
Not only does she consider beauty in the context of the show, but she said the topic is just as relevant in her personal life.

“It’s something my girlfriends and I talk about all the time. Plastic surgery is having such a moment right now — men, women, 20-year-olds. I mean, it is around,” she said. “We’re inundated with these movie stars. Even though they might be 50 or 60 years old, they look amazing.”
Russell continued, “I watch this show and I’m like, I do not look like that, you know. I like the way I look on the show, and it’s amazing that I feel like that’s strange, like that’s a unique thing to look like that, but it is.”
The political thriller centers on Kate Wyler’s life in the spotlight after she was appointed as the United States ambassador to the United Kingdom. Season 3 of The Diplomat is now streaming on Netflix.
