Kevin Costner had strong feelings of love and adoration for his The Bodyguard co-star, Whitey Houston, someone he said he was ‘lucky’ to know after also calling her his “one true love.”
Costner and Houston starred together in the 1992 film, which saw Houston record the hit track I Will Always Love You. The pair became close friends while filming.
The relationship that formed between them led to the pair remaining close until her shocking accidental death by drowning in 2012–with the Dances with Wolves star even making an emotional speech at her funeral–even though he had previously hoped to make a sequel film with Princess Diana instead of her.
Costner had released an emotional statement at the time of Houston’s death, where he admitted he felt strongly for her.
“She was my one true love,” he said at the time.
Houston was found unresponsive and submerged in a bathtub at a room at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills on February 11, 2012, one day before the 54th Grammy Awards.
Her death was later ruled an accident caused by drowning in the tub, combined with the effects of heart disease and extensive cocaine use.
Her daughter, Bobbi Kristina Brown, died three years later in a similar manner, after also being found submerged in a bathtub in her home after ingesting numerous drugs and alcohol in January 2015.
She remained in a coma for six months after her death, before officially dying from lobar pneumonia that July at the age of 22.
