A brand new biography of the Prince and Princess of Wales by Mirror royal editor Russell Myers reveals the moment the couple’s relationship with disgraced Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor was over

William wanted Andrew BANISHED and rowed with Charles over ‘stain on Royal Family’

The Prince and Princess of Wales’s relationship with disgraced Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor went ‘terminal’ after his BBC Newsnight interview. The Mirror royal editor Russell Myers new biography William and Catherine: The Intimate Inside Story, reveals that it came after Andrew failed to apologise for his connection to Jeffrey Epstein, or acknowledge the victims of sexual abuse in the interview.

The explosive book, which draws on access to numerous palace insiders, says that William and Kate had always believed the best option was to keep their distance from Andrew. And it reveals that the couple knew that the disturbing sexual abuse allegations that have dogged him for more than a decade, which he vehemently denies, permanently damaged him in the eyes of the public.

It comes as the first part of The Mirror’s exclusive serialisation, which starts today, also revealed William demanded Andrew be immediately banished from the royal fold “before the rot set in”, following revelations of the former Duke of York’s close relationship with Epstein.

The book sets out how William never saw eye to eye with his disgraced Andrew – and disliked him even before his fall from grace. Myers writes: “The late Queen sought to protect her son from complete banishment, clinging to the hope that he would one day be exonerated.

“Similarly, while acknowledging that his brother could never return to public duties, Charles attempted to honour his mother’s wishes and for a long time stopped short of pushing for Andrew’s complete banishment. By contrast, William made it clear that once he became king there would be no such mercy.”

The new revelatory biography, available to pre-order now, highlights the Prince and Princess of Wales ’s life from their earliest meeting at St Andrews University to the current day and how they have shaped their vision for a modern monarchy and its safe continuation at a time of extreme change and turmoil.

It is the first joint biography of the Prince and Princess of Wales in more than a decade and also highlights the couple’s resilience and dedication in the face of adversity, from the relentless media scrutiny and controversies of their 2022 Caribbean tour, to the shock cancer diagnoses of both the princess and King Charles.

Behind the scenes’ context of the prince and princess’ reaction to the departure from royal life by the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, the forming of the ‘Cambridge way’ and the death of Queen Elizabeth II, is also revealed for the first time.

Myers said: “I’ve spent almost a decade following The Prince and Princess of Wales as part of the Royal pack and have always believed there’s so much more to the couple than the spectacle reveals.

“The result of this biography is a truly intimate portrait of William and Catherine; providing not just unparalleled insight into who they are as individuals, but seismic revelations about them as a couple and the world they inhabit. This biography moves beyond the headlines as it explores love, resilience, and their journey together as they navigate their public duties amid this unprecedented era.”

William and Catherine: The Intimate Inside Story, published on 26 February by Ebury, Penguin Random House, is available to pre-order now.
