Kid Rock blamed Janet Jackson for his Super Bowl performance not being memorable.
The controversial singer appeared on Fox News‘ The Ingraham Angle on Monday, February 9. During his appearance, he spoke about Super Bowl LX and headlining Turning Point USA’s alternative halftime show. Laura Ingraham mentioned that he performed at the Super Bowl in 2004 and asked him about the NFL’s transition from him performing to Bad Bunny.
“Well, first of all, no one remembers I played the Super Bowl cause that was when Janet Jackson showed her boob,” Kid Rock said, as he and Laura laughed. “No one even remembers I was on that thing.”
The 55-year-old then answered Lauren’s question, claiming the transition happened in 2016 when former NFL player Colin Kaepernick took a knee to protest racial injustice and police brutality in America.
Kid Rock said that the move got a lot of people’s “panties in a bunch,” him included. He added that while he didn’t agree with Colin, he had the right to speak his mind.
Kid Rock went on to say that NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell had a “real problem on his hands” back then, and he was wondering how to “get out of this” while continuing to make the “tens upon millions” he makes in a “predominantly Black league.” Kid Rock further said that Roger saw Jay Z as the solution.
Kid Rock said he respects Jay Z for his “hustle and music,” but then said it seems like the rapper was a “DEI hire.” He proceeded to say that Jay Z, in his NFL position, was going to “do right by his base” and named Kendrick Lamar as the halftime performer as an example.
Kid Rock said they “doubled down” this year with Bad Bunny, claiming it was “another middle finger” to MAGA, conservatives and his base.
Kid Rock performed at the Super Bowl XXXVIII halftime show in 2004, along with Janet, Justin Timberlake, Diddy, Nelly, and Jessica Simpson. While Justin and the All for You singer were performing, he went to rip her bodice that was supposed to reveal a red lacy bra underneath. Things did not go according to plan, and Justin ended up exposing her right breast on the broadcast.
Both artists had apologized for the incident. Janet said, “The decision to have a costume reveal at the end of my halftime show performance was made after final rehearsals. MTV was completely unaware of it. MTV, CBS, [and] the NFL had no knowledge of this whatsoever and, unfortunately, the whole thing went wrong in the end. I apologize to anyone offended, including the audience, MTV, CBS and the NFL.”
“I am sorry that anyone was offended by the wardrobe malfunction during the halftime performance of the Super Bowl. It was not intentional and is regrettable,” the Rock Your Body singer said.
While both artists had apologized, Janet was the only one who got fined and blacklisted by MTV and US radio. Over the years, many people have talked about the double standards in how the two were treated.
For example, CBS revoked Janet’s invitation to present at that year’s Grammy Awards while Justin was permitted to attend.
