As well as sending a direct message to Putin in this speech, Harry also urged US leadership – without mentioning Trump’s name – to take action. He said: “The United States has a singular role in this story. Not only because of its power, but because when Ukraine gave up nuclear weapons, America was part of the assurance that Ukraine’s sovereignty and borders would be respected.”
The prince continued: “This is a moment for American leadership, a moment for America, to show that it can honour its international treaty obligations – not out of charity but out of its enduring role in global security and strategic stability.”
Speaking exclusively to The Daily Express about Harry’s speech, Richard Fitzwilliams said: “Harry has chosen to intervene publicly and urge the United States to live up to its responsibilities and pledges, on the eve of King Charles’s highly sensitive state visit to America.”
Fitzwilliams continued: “If the Sussexes wanted roles in soft power diplomacy, and this speech indicates that this is what Harry does want, they should have stayed as working royals despite the stresses.
“If so, they would have been likely, especially with Meghan’s American heritage, to have played an important part in the year America celebrated 250 years of independence.
“They chose instead to step down and then launched brutal attacks on the monarchy. Harry made some strong points in his speech, but this looked like someone in search of a serious role.
“You have to ask, as the King and courtiers are probably asking, whatever next?”
