King Charles’s beloved royal residence in Scotland had to make changes to its scheduled opening times due to the extreme weather. Balmoral Castle, the late Queen Elizabeth’s favourite home and the place where she spent her last moments before her death, was forced to close on Thursday and will have a delayed schedule today due to snowy weather.
A message on the residence’s official Instagram account read: “Due to the continuing wintry weather conditions, Balmoral will be closed to the public for the remainder of the day. Tomorrow’s opening (Friday, 21st November) will be delayed until 11:00am.
“If you have purchased a ticket for tomorrow’s Evening at Balmoral, please be assured that the experience is expected to go ahead as planned. Take care and stay safe.”
Another message on the residence’s website said: “The grounds, gift shop and restaurant are closed to the public on Thursday 20 November due to the snow. We will reopen tomorrow at 11am.”
The usual opening times for Balmoral Castle are between 10am and 2pm on most days of the week, except Mondays and Tuesdays, when it is closed to the public.
The King usually likes to spend time in Balmoral following the Christmas festivities in Sandringham.
He usually heads to the Scottish retreat near the end of December and stays there until mid to late January.
Unlike his mother, who stayed in Balmoral Castle, Charles likes to spend his time on the estate’s Birkhall, his private home with Queen Camilla.
It comes as the UK has been battling freezing temperatures in the last few days.
Temperatures fell as low as minus 11C overnight as the cold snap continued.
According to the Met Office, the frigid temperature was recorded at Loch Glascarnoch in the Scottish Highlands, with the mercury dipping below minus 7C across much of the country.
Temperatures were slightly milder in England and Wales, with lows of minus 6C at Trawsgoed in Ceredigion, Wales and minus 4C at Rostherne, Cheshire.
