King Charles is said to be “frustrated” by his younger brother, Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, who continues to be photographed in public, despite his move to a secluded royal home in Norfolk. The disgraced former Duke of York has been seen walking his dogs on public footpaths, rather than staying on private land.
After reports that Andrew had made a quiet agreement with his elder brother to stay out of public view, sources have suggested that the persistent images of Andrew walking in public have prompted discontent behind palace walls. An insider told Radar Online: “Andrew had effectively agreed to stay out of sight – a kind of informal house arrest – in return for the King continuing to fund his private life. Charles does not want to see images of him looking relaxed or happy in public, given the ongoing Epstein scandal, and this walk has caused real frustration behind the scenes.”
They added: “There is a quiet deal in place for Andrew to keep a low profile and avoid public appearances, and in return, his financial security is maintained. This was about protecting the institution more than anything else. By going out where he could be photographed, Andrew has undermined that understanding and embarrassed the King.”
His Majesty is reportedly sensitive to the damaging optics of Andrew being seen out in public while he is still under police investigation and the effect he is having on the monarchy’s image. One source told Radar: “This is not just about Andrew – it is about how the monarchy is perceived. Any suggestion that he is carrying on as normal risks undermining that.”
Buckingham Palace has been contacted for comment.
He is also reportedly prompting fury by delaying his move from Wood Farm to Marsh Farm until everything in his new home is done to his high standards. One such demand was rehanging curtains from Royal Lodge in Marsh Farm on the Sandringham grounds, with the King paying to have them altered at “considerable expense”, according to the Mail on Sunday.
Additionally, artworks from Royal Lodge, some of which are too large for the walls in Andrew’s new property, are reportedly being rehung by the luxurious removal firm Gander & White, which charges around £15,000 per team. A source claimed to the publication: “The King is angry because he doesn’t want to pay any more than what he has already.”
The source continued: “Marsh Farm has needed rewiring and plastering, and there was even talk of asbestos – it’s not in a fit state for him yet. Meanwhile, Andrew wants the best of everything, and the process is painfully slow. But he needs to be out soon, and the King would have no qualms about pushing him out of Wood Farm if it was needed for overspill. Andrew might end up sleeping in that caravan if he’s not careful.”
