The King, for his part, was said by an aide to have been “deeply honoured to have been invited to be the first British King to give such an address and … greatly touched by the warmth and generosity of the response he received”.
That evening, there was a second speech from the King with even warmer words.
“Tonight,” he told guests at the White House state banquet, “we are here to renew an indispensable alliance which has long been a cornerstone of prosperity and security for both British and American citizens”.
On this trip, the King seems to have found the way to the US president’s heart.
As a parting gift for Mr Trump, before leaving Washington DC to spend Wednesday in New York City, the King presented a bell, following a tradition set by Elizabeth II who gave a new Liberty Bell to mark the 200th anniversary of independence.
The King’s bell was from a Royal Navy ship – a nod, perhaps, to the president’s criticism of those particular Armed Forces in relation to his war in Iran.
It is an original bell from the Second World War, on a boat which fought in the Battle of the Pacific. Its name? HMS Trump.
