While Harry did not name Trump, he did urge American leadership to show that it can “honour its international treaty obligations”.
Speaking to The Express, royal expert Richard Fitzwilliams said that while King Charles may agree with what Harry said in his speech, he is also likely to be surprised by the timing of it.
Fitzwilliams said: “Prince Harry made a powerful speech at the Kyiv Security Conference in Ukraine. He is right to remind us of the horrors of the conflict, with the world’s attention currently focused on America’s War with Iran and the blockade of the Straits of Hormuz.
“Also as the founder of the Invictus Games and patron of the HALO Trust and himself a veteran of two tours of duty in Afghanistan, he has the right to have his say.”
Fitzwilliams continued: “The timing of Harry’s speech, however, is extraordinary. Russian forces invaded Crimea in 2014 and Ukraine in 2022 so this is a long running conflict. Harry has chosen to intervene publicly and urge the United States to live up to its responsibilities and pledges, on the eve of King Charles’s highly sensitive state visit to America.
“This is one of the most stressful periods in Anglo-American relations since the debacle of Suez in 1956. King Charles will be dealing with the unpredictable President Trump.
“The point is surely, not whether what Harry said was right, but why he chose to say it now.
“We also know that the Sussexes relations with President Trump are far from close. Although King Charles, who has taken every opportunity to support Ukraine publicly, is likely to agree with what Harry said, he is likely to have been surprised at the timing.”
