Ace Frehley, the original lead guitarist and founding member of glam rock band KISS, confessed he would have rejoined the band “for the right price” before his unfortunate passing at 74.
Frehley died peacefully surrounded by family in Morristown, New Jersey, following a recent fall, as reported by his agent. His family expressed their devastation and heartbreak in a statement, promising to treasure their memories of the musician.
The rock star, known as The Spaceman during his tenure with the band, reportedly suffered a brain bleed after a fall in his studio a few weeks ago. This incident led to his hospitalization on life support as his health progressively deteriorated.
A 2018 interview with Yahoo featuring Ace has recently resurfaced. During his conversation with journalist Lyndsey Parker, he was asked if he would consider participating in the band’s End of the Road final tour, given the chance.
With a chuckle, Ace responded, “I knew you were gonna ask that. Okay, I have a pat answer, and it’s true: I haven’t been invited.”, reports The Mirror.
However, he conceded he was open to the idea and stated he would “absolutely” do it “for the right price.”
He further added, “The first year of that [1996] reunion tour, we grossed $215 million. … So, what would it be today? Probably double that? Half a billion? I’m there. Anything can happen. … The ball’s in Gene and Paul’s court.
“So fans, if you want it, speak up. If you don’t, don’t. I’m okay either way. Don’t worry about me. Tell Paul and Gene what to do – because you pay their salary. It’s true.”
A 2023 performance at Madison Square Garden was marketed as the group’s final show, but Ace didn’t participate in it.
While Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons declared they would not tour again, they’ve remained open to the possibility of additional performances, and they’ve continued promoting the band’s music and merchandise.
The group’s founding lineup featured Frehley, vocalist-guitarist Paul, tongue-wagging bassist Gene and drummer Peter Criss.
Ace’s is the first death among the four original members.
Paul and Gene released a statement following Ace’s passing, saying, “We are devastated by the passing of Ace Frehley.
“He was an essential and irreplaceable rock soldier during some of the most formative foundational chapters of the band and its history. He is and will always be a part of KISS’s legacy. Our thoughts are with Jeanette, Monique and all those who loved him, including our fans around the world.”
In a statement, Ace’s family expressed, “We are completely devastated and heartbroken. In his last moments, we were fortunate enough to have been able to surround him with loving, caring, peaceful words, thoughts, prayers and intentions as he left this earth. We cherish all of his finest memories, his laughter, and celebrate his strengths and kindness that he bestowed upon others.
“The magnitude of his passing is of epic proportions, and beyond comprehension. Reflecting on all of his incredible life achievements, Ace’s memory will continue to live on forever!”.
