KNEECAP have released their new single, ‘Fenian’, the latest track to be shared off their forthcoming album of the same name, due May 1.
The track celebrates Irish identity and the reclaiming of a historically offensive slur. Described by the Belfast trio as an attempt to “cure our colonial hangover”, the song links Irish folklore, modern-day republicanism and working-class defiance and acts as a political manifesto against silencing attempts.
‘Fenian’ arrives alongside a music video shot in West Belfast and directed by Thomas James.
“For me, this track is about a reclaiming of identity. Not only for the word but also for people too,” says James on the inspiration behind the visual.
“A trippy whirlwind through people and places who embody the spirit of the boys and the song. Of seeing the word ‘Fenian’ through a new lens. It was a blast. It was chaos. It was a fever dream of running around Ireland convincing people to pop a bally on and do something mental. Good times had by all.”
Fenian will feature collaborations with Lankum’s Radie Peat on ‘Cocaine Hill’ and West Bank-based rapper Fawzi on ‘Palestine’.
The 14-track album was produced by Fontaines D.C. and Black Midi collaborator Dan Carey.
