Kristen Wiig says it’s “hard to put into words” what it means to work with Carol Burnett on Palm Royale
“There wasn’t a diva in the bunch at all. It was just a joy to go to work. We just get in the sandbox and play,” Burnett tells PEOPLE about the cast

Life in Palm Beach high society is even more fun when you’re doing it alongside people you love.
Kristen Wiig, who plays character Maxine Dellacorte-Simmons on Apple TV’s Palm Royale, says it’s “hard to put into words” what it means to work with Carol Burnett on the series, which just returned with season 2 on Nov. 12.
“We genuinely love each other,” Wiig, 52, tells PEOPLE of working with Burnett, 92. “I think when you have that ease with a person in real life, you’re able to make bigger creative choices, too. I think one sort of begets the other.”

She adds, “Working together has also brought us closer outside of work, so it’s just been a dream come true for me.”
Burnett feels the same way. “I can’t even say it was work,” she tells PEOPLE. “I just had the best time, and everybody in the cast was a family. I know so many television shows have said, ‘Oh, it was a family,’ but this definitely is one. There wasn’t a diva in the bunch at all. It was just a joy to go to work. We just get in the sandbox and play.”

In season 2, new plot twists and surprises made filming even more fun. “Just being back with everybody was the best part,” Wiig reflects. “And when we got the scripts, we were like, ‘So much happens.’ Just getting to do all the fun stuff that was written for us, and just being together — that’s what I looked forward to.”
The star of The Carol Burnett Show remembers when she first came across Wiig on TV. “The first time I saw Kristen was on Saturday Night Live,” she says. “And I knew in my heart — I thought, ‘Someday I’m going to be able to play with her.’ ”

Wiig, for one, is grateful that day finally arrived. “She shows up every day in a great mood, talking to everyone,” she says of Burnett. “Just seeing the crew react to her, and all of us wanting to find her — not in a creepy way, but between scenes being like, ‘Where’s Carol sitting?’ because you just want to spend time with her. She has the best stories.”
She adds, “After hour 12, you need those little reminders sometimes of how lucky we are. We have a great job, and great people surrounding us. You get reminded of it, that we’re very grateful.”
As for what fans can look forward to in season two, the actresses tease that Burnett’s character, Norma, might just pull off a backflip. “She really stretched,” Wiig jokes. “Norma really is full of secrets.”
